Alpine meadows, sparse stands of trees and a panorama of numerous peaks give hikes around Weinberg a distinctive character. The trails focus on different things: a cultural hike to Weinberg, a route through the village and up to Weinberger Alm, and a trail from the alm to Knoten. The village also features scattered farmhouses and a history that is already hinted at in the name Weinberg.

Choose trails by destination and theme

The cultural hike “Hochbäuerlich – Hidden Farm Hamlets with Views of the Gailtal Alps” leads from Dellach im Drautal railway station up to Weinberg in a series of switchbacks. Its title highlights farm hamlets and views of the Gailtal Alps, giving it a different focus from the named mountain hike “Hochtristenhaus – Just 1,000 Metres of Elevation Gain to an Alpine Idyllic Retreat.”

This mountain hike runs from Dellach im Drautal railway station via Weinberg up to Weinberger Alm. Its title specifies 1,000 metres of elevation gain. The hiking trail from Weinberger Alm to Knoten is named and signposted as the “Franz-Striednig-Steig.” On a route to Knoten, you reach the road coming up from Weinberger Alm and then follow the signs for “Knoten, Franz-Striednig-Weg.” The trails described can therefore be distinguished by their starting points, destinations and names.

Alpine meadows, flowers and mountain views

The ascent to Knoten passes through lush alpine meadows and sparse stands of trees; afterwards, a panorama of numerous peaks opens up. The mountain hike to Weinberger Alm leads to its picturesque larch pastures and the magnificent flower meadows of Oberberger Alm at the foot of the Knoten summit. The two alpine areas offer different landscape features: larch pastures in one, and flower meadows at the foot of the summit in the other.

Numerous medicinal herbs grow between Weinberger Alm and Oberberger Alm, including arnica and bloodroot. These plants add a botanical detail to the picture of the mountain meadows. Comparing the trail destinations reveals not only views of the peaks, but also specific differences in the vegetation described.

Village character and the history behind its name

Woodland tranquillity, lush mountain meadows, scattered farmhouses and magnificent views down into the valley shape the character of Weinberg. The village’s name recalls former viticulture, which was encouraged by the mild climate of the Ochsenschlucht gorge opposite. The name and the hiking landscape offer different perspectives: the name preserves the memory of a former land use, while the trails lead to alpine and mountain meadows.

Parish tradition and a note on getting here

The parish tradition also broadens the picture beyond the landscape. Preparations for the Dellach im Drautal parish’s Thanksgiving festival rotate among the districts each year. At the 2015 festival, Weinberg took part together with Drassnitzdorf, Schmelz and Grientschnig. The annual rotation applies to the parish; Weinberg’s participation with the others is documented for the 2015 festival.

A directory dated 15 October 2025 lists three stops for the Oberes Drautal Postbus shuttle in Weinberg: “Abzweigung vlg. Josn,” “Abzweigung vlg. Prasterhauser” and “Haus vlg. Zachnig.” If you are considering the shuttle for your journey, check the current timetable before travelling.
