Straßburg Castle, its cultural offerings and the trails leading up to it give a trip to Straßburg a variety of possible focuses. The castle’s history dates back to the 12th century; the site also offers a collection of historic textiles, a pipe exhibition and recurring events. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the opening hours, exhibitions and different trails as separate options.
Straßburg Castle and its history
By around 1147, Straßburg Castle already had a mighty circular wall. Its size at the time also largely corresponded to its present-day extent, with a few exceptions: the stable and storehouse building in the northwest and the servants’ building in the southwest were not yet included. These early architectural features bring the castle complex’s long history to life, without reducing its development to a single building or period.
From May to September, Straßburg Castle is open continuously from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; last admission is at 5:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before setting out. The castle courtyard regularly hosts exhibitions featuring works by renowned artists, as well as classical and jazz concerts, readings and plays. Specific programs may vary. If you are planning your visit around an event, check its individual date.
Textiles, pipes and culture in the castle courtyard
The Werkmann Collection comprises historic textile treasures from the Biedermeier period to around 1940/50.
Hermann Sabitzer’s pipe exhibition takes a different approach, displaying countless pipes from around the world. The textiles span a broad historical period, while the exhibition has an international thematic scope. Together with the changing program in the castle courtyard, they offer a variety of cultural highlights rather than focusing on a single exhibition theme. For concerts, readings or plays, check the dates of the specific events.
Trails leading to the castle
Two hiking trails lead to the castle, but they differ in their starting points and layout. The Straßburg Riddle Trail begins right at the main square and leads up the mountain to the castle, with 20 questions about Straßburg along the way. It was created by the Straßburg Young Farmers’ Association in the summer of 2021. The Straßburg Castle Herb Trail, on the other hand, starts right in front of the municipal offices and leads to the castle via the Maria Loretto Chapel.
Another way to get active is the fitness trail, which runs from the foot of the castle hill up to the castle. It has twelve stations, where you can access video demonstrations of the exercises using a QR code. The stations and video instructions set it apart from the two hiking trails.
Wildlife park and leisure complex
The Schloß Straßburg Wildlife Park has seven hectares of pastureland around the castle. Its enclosures are home to fallow and red deer, mouflons, yaks, Cameroon sheep and pygmy goats, among other animals. The animal list may change over time.
The Straßburg leisure complex also offers its own view of the surrounding area: from the outdoor pool, visitors can see Straßburg Castle and the thousand-year-old Lieding Church. Straßburg thus offers historic buildings, culture, trails and an outdoor pool with two named views as distinct topics to consider when planning a trip.
