Circular hiking trails run through the heart of Weißbriach or mostly along the Gössering; there is also a church with a bell dating from the 15th century and the history of a historic spa house. Weißbriach therefore offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: trails through the village and river landscape, local religious history, and other leisure activities. You can decide which of these will shape your stay by considering the specific differences between the routes and historical sites.

Church and Spa History

The Evangelical parish of A.B. Weißbriach was founded in 1782. St. Johann zu Weißbriach Church is believed to be the oldest church in the Gitschtal and has a bell dating from the 15th century. Historical accounts highlighted Weißbriach’s fresh forest air and nearby woodland. Shortly after the First World War, Pastor Wunibald Meyer discovered sulfur-rich water in Weißbriach, which was then considered to have healing properties. A spa house was built around this water shortly afterwards in accordance with Pastor Kneipp’s principles. In chronological order, this history spans a long period: the bell dates from the 15th century, the parish was founded in 1782, and the spa’s history began shortly after the First World War.

Hiking Between the Village and the River Landscape

The different routes are particularly appealing for walks and hikes. The Dorfrundweg RW_N2 is a family-friendly circular hiking trail that runs through the heart of Weißbriach. The village lies between the Gailtal Alps. The Gösseringgraben Nature Trail RW_N6 is also a family-friendly themed circular trail, described as a leisurely route, and runs mostly along the Gössering river landscape. Both trails are family-friendly, but their themes differ: RW_N2 leads through the village, while RW_N6 focuses on the river landscape.

The Einschichtweg RW_N3 leads through the scattered settlement and then back to Weißbriach. The hike from Hermagor to Weißbriach is rated easy. When choosing a route, it is also important to note that these characteristics do not mean the same thing: RW_N2 and RW_N6 are described as family-friendly; the “easy” rating applies to the Hermagor–Weißbriach hike. Conditions on RW_N3 and this hike may vary; check them before setting out.

More Leisure Activities

There are other leisure options beyond the hiking trails. The Weissbriach family ski area has five kilometres of pistes, ranging from easy to intermediate. The Gitschtal adventure outdoor pool in the municipality of Weißbriach has a 40-metre waterslide and a beach volleyball court. Compared with the hikes, the ski area is defined by its piste length and difficulty range, while the pool’s specific amenities are its waterslide and beach volleyball court.

Getting There

From Hermagor, Weißbriach can then be reached by station shuttle and bus. If you are planning this journey, check the departure times for your travel date.
