If you’re looking for a hotel in Dellach, you can start by choosing what you’d like to focus on during your trip: archaeology at Gurina, the history of the Earth at the Geopark Centre, churches and hiking, or cross-country skiing in winter. The sights and trails offer a variety of ways to explore the area.
Gurina: Temple of Hercules and archaeological traces
The Temple of Hercules on Gurina, north of Dellach, is a reconstruction of a Gallo-Roman ambulatory temple and is unique in Austria in this form. The votive tablets with Venetian inscriptions at Gurina are among the oldest in Austria. The first systematic excavations at Gurina began in 1884 under A. B. Meyer.
You can reach the temple from a car park in Dellach or from the car park at the road junction south of Gurina via a short hiking trail. Check local conditions before setting out. The burial mound site at SchmeiĂźerboden can also be reached via the mountain road to Gurina or on foot along a hiking trail. As trail conditions can vary seasonally, check them before setting out.
Geopark Centre in Dellach
The visitor centre of the Carnic Alps Geopark is located in the municipal centre in Dellach. It presents selected fossils and rocks, interactive animations and film presentations about more than 500 million years of Earth’s history. The different types of exhibits offer a variety of ways to explore this long period.
The Geopark Centre also provides hikers, tourists and those interested in geology with information about geologically interesting walks and makes maps available. You can combine a visit focused on Earth’s history with information about hiking destinations and maps.
Churches and their history
An inscription in the chancel of St. Daniel’s parish church gives 1054 as its construction date. St. Helena on Wieserberg is a Romanesque hall church with a small semicircular apse; its Late Gothic tower dates from the early 16th century. The Romanesque frescoes at St. Helena are among the treasures of Romanesque art in Carinthia.
A key is required to visit St. Helena on Wieserberg. You can collect one by presenting an ID during the municipal office’s opening hours: Monday to Thursday, 07:30 to 15:45, and Friday, 07:30 to 12:00. Check the hours before your visit, as municipal office hours may change.
Hiking: themed trail, Jaukenalm and Goldenstein
The Wieserberg and St. Helena Church themed circular hiking trail (TW_N12) is a moderately difficult, 6.2 km circular walk with a historical background. Jaukenalm offers several hikes; the best-known one leads to Jaukenstöckl. This gives you a clearly named circular walk and several hiking options at Jaukenalm, each with different destinations.
The ruins of Goldenstein also involve a specific trail requirement: the final ascent to the plateau follows a narrow, steep path fitted with fall-protection features. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required. Take these requirements into account when deciding whether to include this ascent in your plans.
Cycling and winter cross-country ski trails
The R3, the Carnic Cycle Path, runs through the municipality of Dellach. There is a barbecue area on the R3 at the St. Daniel suspension bridge. This describes both the route of the cycle path through Dellach and a specific spot along the way.
A municipal winter update dated 10 September 2024 describes a groomed trail along the Gail embankment. It runs from Kötschach-Höfling via St. Daniel, Dellach and the Nölbling footbridge, continuing through Gundersheim-Kirchbach. The update also mentions the Nölblingerloipe as another groomed trail. Snow and grooming conditions can vary; check the latest conditions before your visit.
