Aristocratic mansions rise among green hills. Villa Nougués features architecture with European influences; pines and palms are part of the local vegetation. Hydrangeas and violets bloom here thanks to the microclimate. Built heritage and distinctive plant life are among the destination’s notable features.
History and sights
Villa Nougués was established at the end of the 19th century, when sugar entrepreneur Luis Nougués built his home there. Villa Nougués is considered one of Tucumán’s first villas. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is another sight in Villa Nougués. In the Lules Department, a tour of Villa Nougués includes the Stations of the Cross around the Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. The church is a Neo-Gothic temple.
Hike to Huaicondo Waterfall
The route to Huaicondo Waterfall follows trails in Villa Nougués that belong to the Universidad San Pablo T’s Reserva San Pablo T. The hike is 5 km long, takes a little over an hour and is of moderate difficulty. It also includes steep climbs and descents. So when planning, consider not only the distance and duration but also the elevation profile. A guide or authorized provider is recommended for the hike. An entrance fee is charged before you start. Check the current visitor conditions before setting out.
Before reaching the Huaicondo waterfalls, you can see an abandoned former pumping station. It was used as a water pump several decades ago. So, in addition to the hike, this outing also offers a specific reminder of the area’s past use.
Cycling route and regional cuisine
A paved cycling route connects Yerba Buena, San Javier and Villa Nougués. La Cantina in Villa Nougués is a stop along the route and serves regional cuisine. The two activities offer different experiences: the hike focuses on trail length, duration and climbs, while the cycling route connects several places and includes a stop for regional cuisine.
