In Concepción, Plaza Mitre and the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción face each other; the access to Parque Nacional Aconquija is also located in the city. This gives you two different focuses to choose from for your trip: the cultural center and the hiking and landscapes of the national park.

City Center and Motorsport History

Plaza Mitre is Concepción’s main public promenade and also the city’s social and cultural center. The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción is opposite. Together, the two places provide a clear focal point for the city center, where a public square and an important religious building meet.

The Museo del Automovilismo Nasif Estéfano offers another cultural perspective. It traces Nasif Estéfano’s racing career through history and adds a specific motorsport story to the picture of the city. If you are interested in this topic, it is easy to consider it separately from the central landmarks around Plaza Mitre.

Concepción offers guided tours of the city’s important landmarks. If you would like to join one, check for current dates before your trip.

Fiesta Nacional del Locro in August

Concepción celebrates the Fiesta Nacional del Locro in August. The festival features music and competitions to find the best cook and the best locro. Alongside the city’s year-round landmarks, the event adds a seasonal highlight. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and program in advance; competition details and the music program may vary from year to year.

National Park and Trails in the Surrounding Region

Concepción is considered the gateway to Parque Nacional Aconquija. The park offers numerous hiking trails for outdoor activities and includes the archaeological remains of La Ciudacita. Across the wider region, the protected area covers 94,000 hectares of the Yungas and High Andes ecoregions. Check trail conditions and access requirements before setting out.

Regional Context: Departamento Chicligasta

Parque Nacional Aconquija extends across Departamento Chicligasta as well as the departments of Alberdi, Monteros, Río Chico and Tafí del Valle. In Departamento Chicligasta, Villa de Medinas is legally designated as a historic town. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced is one of the historic town’s main buildings. It preserves an old statue of Our Lady of Mercy, brought by the Medina family in the 17th century.

The park trails described here also offer different experiences. The easy Sendero El Pozón passes through mountain forest to a natural pool on the Arroyo Sufrimiento. The Sendero Interpretativo de La Selva Misteriosa also runs through mountain forest and has seven stops where visitors can learn about important processes in this habitat. The Sendero Puesto Zárate is of moderate difficulty and 4.5 kilometers long; it passes through Yungas forest, crosses the Arroyo El Calao and continues to the settlement of Puesto Zárate. This makes it possible to distinguish between a short interpretive trail, a route to a natural pool and a longer trail rated as moderate.

Facilities at Sendero Puesto La Mesada include a free-to-use campsite, a shelter with a fire pit and a visitor toilet. The availability of these facilities may vary.
