Río Grande offers two distinct ways to enjoy a stay: coastal and lagoon nature on the one hand, and museums and historic sites on the other. In the city of Río Grande, the waterfront promenade offers opportunities for wildlife watching, while its collections explore subjects ranging from Selk’nam history to regional art. The city can be reached via the fully paved Ruta Nacional 3, which runs from Paso San Sebastián and the Strait of Magellan into the city and connects Río Grande with the rest of Argentina.

Coastal and Lagoon Landscapes

Reserva Natural Urbana Punta Popper was established in 2012 to protect typical coastal grasslands. Resident birds nest there, while migratory birds stop over in summer. Low, sandy and muddy shores, numerous pebbles and a pronounced tidal range characterize this coastal area. Along the waterfront promenade within the city, information panels explain the reserve’s biodiversity, and there are wildlife-watching points; binoculars are located outside the city administration building.

Reserva Natural Urbana Laguna de los Patos includes groundwater outflows and springs in flood-prone terrain locally known as vega, and is home to bird species from various families. In summer, grasses, flowers and birds can be observed there. In winter, when weather conditions are suitable, the lagoon serves as a natural ice rink for skating. The two seasons therefore offer different highlights: nature watching takes center stage in summer, while skating remains a weather-dependent winter option. Birdwatching on self-guided routes is also a tourist activity in Río Grande and its surroundings.

Museums, Art and Remembrance

Museo Municipal Virginia Choquintel displays objects, documents and photographs relating to the Selk’nam, local industries, oil and communications, as well as local flora and fauna. Teachers at an educational institution can request an appointment for a guided tour of the museum. They can choose the history section, the natural sciences section or the complete tour. Since guided tours are limited to this audience and require an appointment, teachers should check the arrangements in advance.

The permanent exhibition Malvinas en la Memoria commemorates the events of 1982. On display are objects used in the conflict, photographs, newspapers, soldiers’ letters and testimonies from veterans who took part. Museo Monseñor Fagnano, part of the Misión Salesiana complex, offers a different historical and natural history focus. It presents evidence of the Salesian missions in southern Patagonia, including the history of missionaries in the north of the island, Indigenous peoples and major shipwrecks. It also features a collection of taxidermied species from Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica.

Museo Fueguino de Arte displays the Provincial Art Collection in three exhibition halls, with works by provincial and national artists. Another room presents projects related to workshops, training courses and discussion events on fixed and movable panels. Casa de la Cultura Ángela Loig has 450 seats, lighting and sound equipment, two artists’ dressing rooms and an exhibition space. Local and national arts events take place there throughout the year; check specific dates before making plans. At Paseo del Viento, you can find handicrafts made from regional lenga wood, clay and wool, as well as sales stalls. Artistic performances are occasionally held in a central area.

Historic Sites and Getting There

Misión Salesiana Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria was first established in 1893 on the north bank of the Río Grande. After flooding and a major fire, it was moved to its current location near Cabo Domingo on November 6, 1897. The complex includes Capilla Histórica, built in 1898; a workshop where the Sisters of María Auxiliadora taught Selk’nam women; and Casa de la Misión. The site’s history and Museo Monseñor Fagnano provide different points of interest for a visit to the mission.

Estancia María Behety was founded in 1897 by Don José Menéndez. Its historic core is a destination for horseback-riding tours; rides can be booked through providers in Río Grande. Check availability for your preferred dates directly with the providers. As well as museums and coastal nature, historic sites offer another distinct focus for a stay in Río Grande.
