Frías lies on the Albigasta River. Parque General San Martín, the city’s history, and the Fiesta Nacional del Bombo give the town distinct cultural and recreational highlights. The surrounding area also offers natural areas and rock paintings. Find more landscape and cultural attractions in the wider destination of Departamento Choya, including Villa La Punta.

Park, River, and City History in Frías

Parque General San Martín covers eight hectares and offers opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Museo Histórico Municipal y Regional de Frías preserves objects connected with the city’s history. The city profile thus brings together two distinct highlights: recreation in the park and Frías’ history in the museum.

Frías can be reached via paved National Route 157 and paved Provincial Route 6. Check current road conditions before setting out. Its location on the Albigasta and access via both roads provide practical orientation, while the park and museum are the main points of interest in the town.

Bombo Culture and Local Events

The Fiesta Nacional del Bombo is one of Frías’ local events. Tamales, traditional empanadas santiagueñas, and Patay are offered for tasting at the festival. These dishes are therefore part of the celebration. Those interested in cultural events can also visit Sala de Lectura Selva „Pocha“ Ramos, a permanent venue for musical and artistic gatherings.

Museo Histórico Municipal y Regional de Frías and the musical and artistic gatherings at the Sala offer cultural highlights distinct from the festival. Together with Parque General San Martín, they give the city a profile in which history, recreation, and event culture can be considered as separate themes when planning a trip.

Nature and Rock Paintings in the Surrounding Area

A provincial nature reserve lies near Villa La Punta, 52 km from Frías. Hiking and horseback riding are offered there. The nearby Sierras de Guasayán were designated an Important Bird Conservation Area (AICA) because their diverse vegetation provides habitat for numerous bird species.

Rock paintings are also among the natural and cultural attractions in the surrounding area: there are rock paintings in the ravines of Casa del Tigre in the Sierras de Guasayán. Around Frías, you can therefore choose from both natural areas and a specific archaeological site, while the park, museum, and festival are the main attractions in the town itself.

Villa La Punta in Departamento Choya

In the wider destination of Departamento Choya, Villa La Punta lies on the eastern slope of the Sierras de Guasayán. The landscape there features lush greenery, clear streams, and gently rolling sierras. The area within a five-kilometer radius of Villa La Punta was declared a provincial nature reserve. The protected area associated with Villa La Punta offers walks and horseback rides; Cerro de La Cruz in Villa La Punta is suitable for trekking and adventure activities.

Walking and horseback riding trails from Villa La Punta lead to nearby ravines, including Quebrada de La Chilca, as well as places such as Pozo de Leiva. Narrow paths and trails through lush vegetation are available for longer walks. These landscape and trail attractions belong to Villa La Punta and Departamento Choya, not to Frías itself.

Religious history is also part of the destination of Departamento Choya. In Quebrada de La Chilca, an image of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of Villa La Punta, stands at a place known as „la piedra que llora.“ The parish community of Villa La Punta, dedicated to the Virgen, was founded in 1859. A stone chapel built in 1860 in honor of the Virgen del Carmen was replaced by a new temple in 1944. The Virgen del Carmen festival includes a procession on foot or on horseback, as well as a celebration featuring regional food, music, and folk dances.

The highlights are easy to distinguish when planning a trip: Frías offers a park, city history, and Bombo culture; Villa La Punta and the ravines of Departamento Choya add further natural and cultural attractions. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay on Frías itself or include the wider region.
