San Jerónimo Department offers a range of travel experiences: river islands in the Paraná, activities on the water, and a history dating back to the 16th century. Parque Nacional Islas de Santa Fe and Puerto Gaboto shape its focus on nature and water; Coronda and Desvío Arijón add cultural sites and an annual festival.

Islands, Waterways, and a Hike

Parque Nacional Islas de Santa Fe is located in San Jerónimo Department and encompasses eight river islands in the Río Paraná. In the park, visitors can take independent trips on the water as well as outings by kayak, canoe, and rowboat. Recreational groups often set out from Puerto Gaboto.

The El Timbó trail complements the water activities with an option for exploring on foot. It is 2 km long for the round trip and has a moderate difficulty level. Visitors to the park can choose between a specific hiking route and various types of boat trips, each offering a different focus.

The sequence of road and water travel is important for getting there: the park can be reached by car as far as Puerto Gaboto; from there, the rest of the journey is by water. Puerto Gaboto is a gateway port to the national park. Check route conditions before setting out.

Puerto Gaboto itself also offers a reason to focus your stay on water activities: recreational fishing is one of the main activities there. There are also moorings and boat ramps with the necessary facilities for visiting the islands.

History and Culture in Different Places

Puerto Gaboto is also associated with Fuerte Sancti Spiritus. The fort, dating from 1527–1529, is considered the first European settlement in the Río de la Plata basin and in what is now Argentina. Archaeological investigations in Puerto Gaboto identified and recovered structures and artifacts from this first settlement. The town’s history thus complements its focus on water and islands with an archaeological perspective.

In Coronda, Parroquia San Jerónimo, Cruz de las Misiones, and Cristo de los Pescadores are among the visitor attractions. At the Museo Municipal, the Sala Alfonsina Storni is especially highlighted. These named places and the museum area give a visit to Coronda its own cultural focus.

Desvío Arijón hosts the Fiesta Provincial del Frutillero every year, between the last weekend in October and the first weekend in November. Those making the festival the reason for their trip can plan their stay specifically around the stated dates.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Reason for Traveling

Coronda’s museum and visitor attractions, as well as the festival in Desvío Arijón, appeal to different interests. Focus your search on the place that matters most for your planned stay, rather than assuming there is a shared route.

A Broader Look at Santa Fe
