Sunchales offers several distinct ways to explore its history: a city museum, the Rotania, regarded as the world’s first self-propelled harvester, and the Fuerte de Los Sunchales, founded in 1796. These historical themes are complemented by cultural venues, activities for children and a football tournament with participants from across the country. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether to focus on city and engineering history, culture or the dates of a particular event.

City History and Engineering

The Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal “Basilio María Donato” was founded on January 2, 1981, and opened in November of that year. The Museo Municipal “Basilio Donato” preserves objects relevant to the history and culture of its community. Its stated aim is to give visitors a comprehensive insight into the city’s history through an engaging and well-organized visit. The preservation of objects relevant to the community and the interpretation of the city’s history are therefore central themes.

The Rotania is regarded as the world’s first self-propelled harvester. Alfredo Rotania, an Italian immigrant, built it in Sunchales in 1929 and called it “automotriz.” Today, the Cosechadora Rotania is on display in a glass shelter on Avenida Yrigoyen at the corner of General Paz. The machine is thus associated with a specific name and year of construction, as well as its display at a precisely identified location in Sunchales.

The Fuerte de Los Sunchales was founded on April 11, 1796. It was part of a line of defense intended to halt the advance of Indigenous peoples and protect mercury being transported on its way to Alto PerĂş. Its historical purpose places the fort in context not only through its founding date but also through its role within this line of defense.

Cultural Venues and Activities for Children

The Centro de Cultura Artística “Amigos del Arte” was declared cultural heritage on August 24, 2009. It was established to share a wide range of artistic activities with the community, develop them and make them accessible. The chapel of Colegio “San José” serves a different purpose: it was declared cultural heritage on September 8, 2008, and today serves as a cultural center for the school and the community. Thus, a venue for community art activities stands alongside a chapel that functions as a cultural center.

Two different places are mentioned for children. Parque San Ignacio de Loyola is a children’s park built in Sunchales next to the Ferrocarril Mitre tracks. Plaza Bici Vueltas Sin Fin features a traffic circuit for children and is also known in Sunchales as “Plaza de los Tubos.” If you come across this second name, it refers to the same plaza. While the park is designated as a children’s park, the plaza’s specific focus is its traffic circuit.

The Fiesta Nacional del FĂştbol Infantil

One event held during a set period each year is the Fiesta Nacional del Fútbol Infantil. It has taken place in the first half of October since 1985. During the festival, children and teenagers from across the country gather at Club Atlético Unión (CAU) to take part in a football tournament. If you would like to plan your trip around the tournament, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.
