El Chalten combines striking viewpoints with hikes of varying lengths. From Mirador Laguna Torre, the view extends across the Fitz Roy River valley to Grande Glacier and Cerro Torre. Loma del Pliegue Tumbado offers a 360-degree panorama of Lago Viedma, the Cerro Torre valley, and Fitz Roy. This gives the town several perspectives on the mountain landscape; the time needed for each route is also a practical point of comparison when planning.

Getting There and Trailheads

In the northern zone, the western turnoff from provincial route RP 41 leads to El Chalten; the route covers 95 paved kilometers. Road conditions can change seasonally. Several routes start at different locations: in the town center, in the north of town, or at the entrance to town by the national park visitor center. If you choose El Chalten as your overnight base, you can take these starting points into account when planning individual hikes, rather than assuming they all begin at the same place.

Viewpoints and Their Vistas

The viewpoints differ in the landscapes they overlook. At Mirador Laguna Torre, the view stretches across the Fitz Roy River valley, with Grande Glacier and Cerro Torre in the background. From Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, a 360-degree panorama takes in Lago Viedma, the Cerro Torre valley, and Fitz Roy. Laguna Capri is also a viewpoint overlooking Cerro Fitz Roy. You can therefore choose between a view across a river valley, a panoramic vista, and a focused view of Fitz Roy.

Hikes by Time Required

The walk to Mirador Laguna Torre starts in the town center and passes through Andean Patagonian forest. The five kilometers to the viewpoint are listed as taking one hour and 15 minutes. The route to Laguna Capri starts in the north of town and takes a total of three hours and 30 minutes round trip. These are two different time frames for routes to viewpoints.

A longer undertaking is the route to Laguna de Los Tres: along it is the closest point on the trekking trails from which Cerro Fitz Roy can be seen. The one-way journey takes four hours. The route from Loma del Pliegue Tumbado to Laguna Toro, at about 15 kilometers and approximately 12 hours round trip, takes a different amount of time again. These details help distinguish shorter walks from longer trekking routes when planning. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The route itself also provides useful orientation: the trekking route to Laguna del Cerro Torre follows the course of the Fitz Roy River. The trail to Laguna Torre leads to De Agostini campsite. These details describe the route or a destination along the way without specifying a walking time or the campsite’s current operating status.

Nature and Local History

The historic Circuito Azul – Lo Histórico leads to important sites that tell the story of El Chalten’s origins, development as a town, and identity-shaping events. Circuito Verde – Lo Natural focuses on the natural surroundings, the landscape and flora, and the relationship between the community and nature. The two walks therefore have different emphases: local history on the one hand, and landscape and the connection with nature on the other.

On the loop trail to Mirador de Los Cóndores y Águilas, you can observe condors and eagles; the trail starts at the entrance to town by the national park visitor center. Nearby, the El Chorrillo del Salto loop trail has a cycle path. Boat trips and historic and cultural walks are also offered in El Chalten. Specific providers and dates for these activities may vary.
