El Gorosito is one of Caleta Olivia’s main tourist attractions and a landmark for visitors. The Monumento al Obrero Petrolero, as the statue is also known, is almost 13 metres tall, made of bronze and was erected in 1969. The landmark’s name and history provide a cultural starting point for a visit; along the coast, walking paths and nature observation take centre stage.

Coastal Walk and Birdwatching

The Paseo Costero is 5 kilometres long and can be explored on foot or by vehicle. At low tide, it offers views of the intertidal zones; birds can also be observed there. The route thus combines a specific coastal trail with two different ways of taking in the surroundings.

Birdwatching is also a prominent tourist attraction in Caleta Olivia. It is offered both in coastal marine habitats and in the steppe, along various tourist routes. Those especially interested in birds can compare the birdwatching opportunities on the Paseo Costero with the broader range of routes.

Caleta Olivia’s beaches also offer suitable conditions for coastal fishing. This is another way to experience the coast: alongside the views and birdwatching, this activity is among the local options.

Protected Nature Around Caleta Olivia

The Reserva Natural Provincial Caleta Olivia is located nearby. It protects a colony of South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens), estimated at around 500 to 1,000 animals. This approximate figure conveys the colony’s size without presenting it as an exact population count.

The geographical formation that gives Caleta Olivia its name has also been a municipal nature reserve since 1992. This means that a protected area nearby and a protected landscape feature that gave the city its name are two distinct natural attractions.

Getting There and Regional Context

The land route to Caleta Olivia is via Ruta Nacional 3. The city is also the first stop on the Ruta Azul tourist corridor, which runs along the coast in Santa Cruz, following Ruta Nacional 3.

The wider travel destination of Departamento Deseado also includes places to visit in Puerto Deseado. The Reserva Provincial Ría Deseado and Parque Interjurisdiccional Marino Isla Pingüino are located there. Boat trips on the Ría are offered as a visitor activity; an excursion to the marine park is also available from Puerto Deseado. At the Reserva Provincial Ría Deseado, visitors can encounter coastal species including Commerson’s dolphins, sea lions, Magellanic penguins and cormorants. When comparing destinations in Departamento Deseado, it is helpful to associate these offerings with Puerto Deseado and distinguish them from Caleta Olivia’s local coastal and nature attractions.
