Carpintería is known as the “National Capital of Free Flight”; paragliding is one of the town’s featured adventure activities. Nearby, you’ll also find a craft trail, a historic chapel and a municipal bathing area.

Paragliding as a defining feature of the town

The nickname links Carpintería with free flight, and paragliding is highlighted as an adventure activity. If you’d like to make this the focus of your trip, it offers a clear reason to choose this destination. The chapel, crafts and festival provide cultural connections to the town.

Crafts, history and a festival venue

The Capilla Nuestra Señora de Luján in Carpintería has a long history: construction began in 1941. Along the town’s craft trail, local artisans make mate gourds, sweets, alfajores and other items. Historical architecture and traditional crafts thus sit alongside the connection to free flight, giving your stay a range of themes to explore.

The Fiesta Provincial de los 101 Chivos is held on the stage at Plaza Manuel Zalazar. If you’d like to include the festival in your stay, check the specific event date before travelling.

Balneario Municipal Carpintería is located 3 km east of the central square. It has a swimming pool and barbecue areas shaded by native trees. Its nearby location adds another kind of option for planning your days alongside the town’s cultural life.

Culture in the Ayacucho Department

The wider destination of Departamento Ayacucho also offers its own cultural and historical themes. In San Francisco del Monte de Oro, Iglesia San Francisco de Asís has written records dating back more than 200 years; the church is part of one of the important cultural heritage trails in San Luis Province. Also in San Francisco del Monte de Oro, the Escuela Rancho has adobe walls and a roof of straw and mud laid over wooden beams. Its simple corridor is supported by rustic tree trunks.

In Luján, the patron saint celebrations in October honour the Virgin and bring locals and visitors together for Masses, processions, music and folk dancing. In the Piedra Blanca area near Luján, caves and rock overhangs feature paintings of geometric and zoomorphic figures, pointing to the earlier presence of Indigenous peoples. The celebrations take place in October; the paintings offer a glimpse of an earlier history. In Candelaria, tours lead to murals and examples of urban art.

In Quines, the Centro de Artesanos offers workshops and courses, as well as a display and sales space for wooden and stone crafts, including carvings, paintings and textiles. The Chimenea in Quines points to another aspect of the town’s history: it was built in 1948 or 1949 to serve the newly established Aserradero Santa María sawmill, and it still stands.

Three-dimensional letters spelling out the name have been installed at the public beach of Dique Las Palmeras as a visual and photographic attraction. Two interactive three-dimensional maps show geographical attractions in the surrounding area and include QR codes for further information. Together, the maps help visitors find their way, while the letters serve as a photo spot.
