Festivals and competitions shape Tartagal’s cultural offerings: Corso Color brings together parades, costumes and rhythms, while culinary competitions put empanadas and locro in the spotlight. For a touch of nature, Paraje Virgen de la Peña is 11 kilometres from Tartagal.

Festivals and Cultural Traditions

Corso Color features a parade organised by immigrant and Indigenous communities, with colourful costumes, choreography and a variety of rhythms. At the 2026 edition, more than 30 groups paraded along Avenida 20 de Febrero in Tartagal. If you plan to include this event in your trip, check the dates for your chosen year.

The Carnaval de Invierno takes place during the July school holidays. It features groups performing the traditional “pim pim”, the sayas of Bolivian fraternities, fancy dress, batucadas and Indigenous comparsas. Another cultural highlight is Arete Guazú, the “great festival” celebrating the maize harvest: ethnic groups dance the “pim pim” for days and drink chicha, a fermented maize beverage.

The Centro Cultural de los Pueblos Originarios in Tartagal was designed as a participatory, inclusive centre for leisure activities proposed by Indigenous communities. The Fiesta de la Cultura Nativa is also part of the cultural scene: singer-songwriter Jorge Rojas organises this solidarity and integration festival.

Culinary Competitions and Sport

The municipal Concurso de la Empanada was held at EstaciĂłn de Trenes railway station. The 20th traditional Concurso del Locro had 32 participants from various neighbourhoods of Tartagal. The two competitions have different focuses: one features empanadas in its title, the other locro; they also differ in their respective settings and in participation from different neighbourhoods.

The Fiesta Patronal in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua is celebrated in June. The Clásica San Antonio, a cycling race with participants from several provinces and Bolivia, also takes place during the patron saint celebrations. The Sun’s Race is also held in June: the motorcycle race follows a 32-kilometre course. This means two different sports appear on the calendar in the same month, one as part of the patron saint celebrations and the other as a race over a set course length. Before travelling for either event, check the dates for your chosen year.

Nature Nearby

Paraje Virgen de la Peña is 11 kilometres from Tartagal. There, the El Chorro waterfall offers an opportunity to enjoy nature. This excursion is clearly distinct from the cultural and sporting events in Tartagal: here, the focus is on a waterfall as a natural attraction, while festivals, competitions and their respective programmes shape the selection there.
