Discover Salta from different perspectives: through buildings steeped in history, museums offering insights into the city and the fight for independence, cable car rides over the city and hills, and regional cuisine. Whether culture, views or food is your priority can help determine which hotel is right for you.

City History at Historic Sites

The Casona Histórica de Finca Castañares dates back to the early 18th century. On June 18, 1813, it housed General Belgrano’s troops; the Battle of Salta was planned there. Casona Finca Castañares is in the northern, increasingly urbanized part of the city and is part of the Belgrano Route, as well as Salta’s museums and historic monuments. Its historical and cultural tour takes visitors through five rooms. Exhibits and displays include audiovisual projections, objects, paintings, models, uniforms, replicas, photographs and philatelic items.

The Museo Güemes also combines a historic site with its story: it is housed in a building in the heart of the city, where the royal treasury of the Intendancy of Salta del Tucumán operated toward the end of the 18th century and where Martín Miguel de Güemes lived with his family. The museum tour comprises ten rooms and uses scenographic and audiovisual displays to tell the story of General Martín Miguel de Güemes and the struggle for emancipation. While Castañares displays a variety of exhibits across several rooms, the Museo Güemes tells its story along a themed route.

The Museo de la Ciudad focuses on everyday life in past centuries. Its exhibition includes 18th- and 19th-century furniture, clothing, photographs, accessories and everyday objects from the period. The Catedral Basílica de Salta offers another historical perspective: it houses the images of the Lord and the Virgin of the Miracle, the city’s patron saints.

Views, Music and Special Visits

Two Teleféricos offer different perspectives on the landscape. The Teleférico Ala Delta connects the summit of Cerro San Bernardo with Cerro Ala Delta. Its panoramic route is more than one kilometer long and passes over the city of Salta and the surrounding hills. The Teleférico San Bernardo takes visitors to the summit on a ten-minute ride and offers views of Salta and the surrounding area. The details describe different features: one connects two summits and gives the route’s length, while the other gives the ride time to the summit.

The Museo San Francisco offers an audiovisual 3D mapping show about the history of the Franciscan Order and a nighttime tour of the oldest part of the San Francisco Monastery. If you want to include the tour in your plans, check the schedule in advance. Traditional peñas with live music can be found on Calle Balcarce. A historical account at the monastery and live folk music offer different cultural experiences in Salta.

Regional Cuisine and Culinary Experiences

Experiencia Patio San Francisco serves regional food and wines from the valleys in the historic courtyard of Iglesia San Francisco. Another way to explore the cuisine is the gastronomic workshop “Cómo hacer tu propia humita”: participants learn to prepare the filling using typical ingredients for this traditional dish from Salta. One experience focuses on food and wine, the other on preparation. The city’s culinary identity includes typical and traditional products, regional cuisine and the culinary heritage of immigrants.

In the Wider Destination of Departamento Capital

Departamento Capital also has its own themes and places, which should not be confused with the attractions described in the city of Salta. In San Lorenzo, Avenida Juan Carlos Dávalos, also known as “Camino a la Quebrada,” leads to Quebrada de San Lorenzo and features a special variety of architectural styles. Guided trekking tours pass through jungle and hills, offer panoramic views and provide insights into the local flora and fauna.

For nature lovers, Reserva Natural del Huaico offers walks of around four hours led by experts, where visitors can observe and identify hundreds of bird species. San Lorenzo also has several zones classified as AICAS, or areas of special interest for bird conservation. More than 230 bird species have been recorded there, particularly in Reserva Privada El Huaico; the number may change as new surveys are conducted. These nature experiences are quite different from Salta’s museums and urban history.

Other regional options each have their own conditions: the Circuito con Bicicletas eléctricas San Lorenzo - Las Costas passes through San Lorenzo, leads to Finca Las Costas and continues to Quebrada de San Lorenzo. Visits to craft workshops in San Lorenzo can be arranged; the focus is on pieces especially associated with rural or gaucho life. In Atocha, the patron saint festival of the Holy Virgin of Atocha is celebrated every December. Gral. Martín Miguel de Güemes International Airport is an important landmark for travelers arriving in Salta: it connects the city with the rest of the country and the world.
