El Bolsón combines arrival via Ruta Nacional 40 with cultural visits and routes through an agricultural landscape. You can focus on the town’s cultural heritage, plan a guided tour, or choose a route that can be explored using different modes of transport.

Getting to El Bolsón

El Bolsón can be reached via Ruta Nacional 40. From San Carlos de Bariloche to the north, the 120 km journey passes through Villa Mascardi and El Foyel; from Esquel to the south, the distance is 180 km. These distances make the north–south approach concrete and help you assess access based on your starting point.

Culture in El Bolsón

MAHBO focuses on the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the local community. The art history museum in El Bolsón preserves both aspects of this heritage. Casa de la Cultura complements this focus with recreational activities in theater, music, and painting. This offers two distinct ways to engage with culture: cultural heritage at the museum and activities in three areas at Casa de la Cultura.

The Vivero Humus tour adds a guided visit to a nursery in El Bolsón. The tour includes a snack, with some of its ingredients sourced from the nursery’s own harvests. Seasonal details and booking information may change; check them before your visit. The museum, cultural recreational activities, and guided nursery visit differ in their focus and format.

Routes and scenery nearby

The Camino de los Nogales is a 10 km route through an agricultural area near El Bolsón. You can explore it by car, by bicycle, or on foot. The Camino de los Nogales leads to Rinconada de Nahuelpan on the slope of Cerro Piltriquitrón; Cascada de Nahuelpan is located there. It consists of two waterfalls that join to form a fast-flowing, winding stream. This connects a visit to the waterfalls with a named route and a specific location.

Another viewpoint is at Cerro Amigo, 2 km east of El Bolsón town center. It offers an easy, family-friendly walk with viewpoints overlooking the town, the valley, the mountain range, and Cerro Piltriquitrón. The two destinations differ in what they offer: the Camino focuses on its route length and three possible ways to explore it, while Cerro Amigo focuses on the walk and its viewpoints.

The wider region

In the wider regional area around the El Bolsón valley lies the ANP Río Azul–Lago Escondido protected area. It has an interconnected network of 13 mountain huts. This shifts the focus from individual visits in El Bolsón to regional trekking infrastructure.
