Quilaquina can be explored from several distinct perspectives: the view of Lago Lácar from Mirador de Quila Quina, the spacious beach at La Puntilla, hiking and horseback riding options, and rock paintings in the surrounding area. To choose a stay that suits you, you can first decide whether views and the beach, outdoor activities, or cultural connections should be the focus. Options range from a hike of about one hour to a trekking route in the southern zone of the park; boat trips and lake transfers are also available.
The lookout and beach as two landscape perspectives
Mirador de Quila Quina offers a view of Lago Lácar. La Puntilla is the spacious beach in Paraje Quila Quina. This gives you two different reasons to choose where to go: a view of the lake and a broad stretch of beach. If you choose Quilaquina for its scenery, you can decide whether a lookout point or the beach should be the focus of your stay.
Getting around on foot or horseback
Sendero El Cipresal offers a hike of about one hour starting from Paraje Quila Quina. The approximate duration gives you a concrete time reference for planning your day: you can treat the trail as a manageable, standalone part of a hike. Another option is the Quila Quina–Hua Hum trekking route, which is among the routes in the southern zone of the park. This gives you a hike with an approximate duration alongside a named trekking route and its location within the park.
Horseback riding excursions are also specifically named: “La Esperanza,” “Amanecer Sureño,” and “Cabalgatas del Lácar” are organized in Quila Quina by Mapuche communities. So if you include horseback riding in your plans, you can choose from specific excursions that are organized by the communities. Compared with the hiking trails, this is another way to get around, identified by the excursions’ names and the communities organizing them.
Cultural connections in the village and surrounding area
On the way to Villa Quila Quina, you can see the homes of members of a Mapuche community. Together with the horseback riding excursions organized by Mapuche communities, these offer different cultural connections: homes visible along the way to the villa and activities organized by communities. Rock paintings a few kilometers from the shore can also be visited from Paraje Quila Quina. For planning purposes, the distances differ: the homes are visible on the way to the villa, while the rock paintings are a place to visit in the surrounding area.
Boat trips and lake transfers
Naviera Lacar y Nonthué offers boat trips and excursions, as well as lake transfers to Villa Quila Quina and Hua Hum. Within the broader destination of Departamento Lácar, boats from the pier in San Martín de los Andes reach the coast of Quila Quina in about half an hour. This approximate travel time provides a guide to the journey from San Martín; schedules and operating conditions may change. Check them before making firm plans for a boat trip or transfer.
