Colonia Aurora combines the island landscapes of the RĂo Uruguay with agricultural experiences and festivals.

Places to Help You Find Your Way

Camping Municipal is located on Ruta N° 2 by Arroyo Macaco, two kilometers from the Aurora intersection. If you plan to stay there, check in advance whether the campground is currently open for use.

Museo Casa del Mate is located on Ruta Provincial 221, at kilometer 11, in Colonia Alicia Alta, Colonia Aurora. Use the address for guidance, and check local conditions before setting out.

Isla Chafariz and the River Landscape

Within the municipality of Colonia Aurora, near Paraje Puerto Alicia, lies Isla Chafariz, a group of islands in the RĂo Uruguay that belongs to Argentina. Its beaches are made up of rounded stones, and the islands are lushly vegetated. The largest island is about 35 hectares in size. A 2019 report describes the island group as uninhabited because of flooding on the RĂo Uruguay.

To reach Isla Chafariz, you can travel by land and then cross by boat; Colonia Alicia on the Río Uruguay is the access point. Before making plans, check which route is currently available. This lets you distinguish the island’s natural scenery from a visit focused on agriculture, rather than combining them into a single outing.

Agritourism and Local Products

A 2020 description associates visits to colonists’ farms with agritourism in Colonia Aurora. The tour described also included the production facility of Cooperativa Alto Uruguay Limitada (CAUL). Visitors could tour the facilities and see the production process.

These visits typically included lunch or snacks; visitors could also sample local products such as pineapples. Agriculture, processing and local products therefore offer a different focus from the river landscape of Isla Chafariz. If this experience is important to your trip, ask in advance whether visits are currently available.

Festivals and Their Dates

The Fiesta Provincial del Ananá has a permanent venue in the municipality of Colonia Aurora and takes place every year in February. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, its annual month can serve as a guide.

The III. Fiesta del Tractor opened on September 16, 2023, at the entrance roundabout of Colonia Aurora. It commemorates the Tractorazo of September 2020, when colonists gathered to protect their work equipment. This specific date describes the third edition; if you are planning a trip around a festival, check the dates of each event before booking.

Where Colonia Aurora Fits in the Alto Uruguay Corridor

Colonia Aurora is one of the municipalities in the Alto Uruguay Corridor in Misiones. The corridor also includes El Soberbio, San Vicente, San Pedro and Fracrán. It is considered one of the province’s outstanding nature travel areas and brings together adventure, gastronomy, sports, events and landscapes. The Río Uruguay and the Selva offer opportunities for ecotourism and active tourism; the Saltos del Moconá are among the region’s most popular destinations. This regional context complements the different themes Colonia Aurora offers travelers choosing where to go.
