Apóstoles brings together yerba mate culture, religious traditions and natural attractions. The city is the national capital of yerba mate and is known as the “Provincial Capital of Holy Week and Pesanké.” This means visitors can find different reasons to travel: an annual yerba mate festival, religious customs associated with Holy Week, and opportunities for walks and wildlife observation. Dates and seasonal conditions play different roles depending on the purpose of your visit.

Yerba Mate and Cultural Landmarks

In front of the Casa del Mate stands a sculpture over two meters tall, depicting the traditional Guaraní process of making yerba mate. The Casa del Mate is at the end of the second square, on Avenida Sarmiento and Calle Alvear; its entrance faces Plaza Gral. San Martín. The sculpture and its location connect yerba mate with a specific place in the cityscape.

The Fiesta Nacional de la Yerba Mate also takes place in Apóstoles every year. Since dates and programs vary, it is a good idea to check the details for your intended year of travel. Another cultural landmark is the Monumento al Pesanké at the entrance to the city. Sergio Brua created the monument, which was inaugurated in 2018. It honors European pioneers and embodies the ancient symbol of the decorated egg.

Religious Traditions and City History

The Recorrido de las 7 Iglesias takes visitors to temples of both the Latin and Byzantine Ukrainian rites. During Holy Week, the Santa Sábana (Plashchanétsia) is displayed at Iglesia Santísima Trinidad, a tradition of the Byzantine Ukrainian rite. Because this display is tied to Holy Week, check dates and access arrangements before your trip. The route to the temples and the seasonal display offer different ways to explore the city’s religious traditions.

The Paseo Histórico Cultural invites visitors to learn about famous figures laid to rest at the Cementerio de Apóstoles. This adds a historical perspective to the religious and cultural themes: the focus here is on people whose final resting place is connected to the city’s collective memory.

Walks, Wildlife and Outdoor Experiences

The six-hectare Reserva Tupambaé is home to a variety of botanical species and typical local fauna, which visitors can experience along signposted walking trails. The reserve also offers walks on marked paths and the chance to see mythological sculptures. The information center stocks regional food products and various yerba mate brands. In winter, it is open to the public on weekends from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Since visitor services may change seasonally, check the hours when planning your visit.

In Parque Centenario, a long path runs around an artificial lake. In an area protected by the Apóstoles municipal government, visitors can observe birds, ducks and a caiman; sightings of individual animals may vary. By contrast, the Reserva Tupambaé focuses on signposted walking trails, botanical diversity and sculptures, while the park path combines a lake with protected wildlife.

Balneario Municipal Chimiray offers opportunities for day visits and camping. Direct access to the stream invites visitors to cool off and enjoy the natural surroundings. If you plan to visit, check seasonal conditions before your trip.
