Get to know Villa Nueva through specific addresses and historical dates: Salas de Arte Libertad is an art space at Libertad 466, and the history of Biblioteca PĂșblica Municipal Almafuerte dates back to its relocation to its current location in 1928. Here, you can encounter both an art venue and a municipal library with a long institutional history.

Art, Library History and the Town’s Name

Salas de Arte Libertad is located at Libertad 466 in Villa Nueva. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. As opening hours may change, it is best to check them shortly before your visit.

Biblioteca PĂșblica Municipal Almafuerte was moved to its current location in Villa Nueva in 1928. It is the oldest municipal library in GuaymallĂ©n and the second-oldest in the province. Its collection comprises more than 25,000 items, including material dating back to 1900; the collection may continue to grow. The library thus offers two distinct historical reference points: its long-standing institutional role and a collection spanning several decades.

The history of the town’s name also has a specific date. On July 17, 1898, the “Nueva Villa” and the municipal building were officially inaugurated during Emilio Civit’s governorship and Silvano Rodríguez’s term in office. Later, common usage turned the name of the departmental seat into “Villa Nueva.” The historical name “Nueva Villa” and the place name used today therefore belong to different stages of this development.

A historical tour in Villa Nueva as part of the “Recorridos con historia” series also explored Plaza del Encuentro. During a tour in the series, Iglesia Sagrada Familia was mentioned.

More Perspectives in the Guaymallén Department

The wider destination of GuaymallĂ©n Department offers additional cultural, culinary and active pursuits. The municipal “Recorridos con historia” program included guided walks to historic and heritage-listed places in the department; one edition took place in 2025. These walks offer a different perspective from Villa Nueva’s focus on art and libraries.

Wine also plays a role in this regional setting: several wineries in the Guaymallén Department are open to visitors. Visitors can learn about the winemaking process and take part in tastings. As participating wineries may change, check in advance which visits are available.

GuaymallĂ©n’s Bicitour program showcased the department’s tourist and cultural attractions by bicycle. A tour documented in 2024 passed through several districts and ended at a winery with a wine tasting.

In 2024, the “De la Bodega a tu Resto” series also brought food and wine together: ten tasting events were held at various restaurants in the department. The series aimed to promote GuaymallĂ©n’s dining scene and wineries.

“Patios de GuaymallĂ©n” should also be considered a past format. The free program described for 2023 brought music and dance to changing locations throughout the GuaymallĂ©n Department and took place outdoors. The department’s founding area is also home to the Monumento al Cancionero Cuyano by artist Elio Ortiz and Casa Museo Molina. This wider regional cultural context can thus be distinguished from Villa Nueva’s specific themes of art, libraries and history.
