In Malargüe Department, volcanoes, wetlands and unusual rock formations tell the story of very different landscapes. There are also places where science and history take center stage. When planning a trip, you can choose between nature experiences, winter sports and cultural discoveries, without making everything revolve around a single attraction.
Science and History in Malargüe
At Planetario Malargüe, the guided tour begins with three artifacts related to the sun. Depending on the visit, the tour then continues either to the science museum or to the ESA exhibitions. The digital planetarium dome also offers something distinctive: it shows programs and interactive content and can accommodate up to 65 people. A visit therefore combines engaging interpretation with a tour of other exhibition areas.
Another cultural destination is Capilla Histórica Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It is considered one of the most significant monuments in Malargüe, Mendoza, and a living testament to the history and cultural identity of Malargüe Department. The planetarium and the historic chapel thus offer different perspectives: scientific topics and exhibitions in one place, and the department’s cultural heritage in the other.
Volcanic Landscapes and Geological Formations
Reserva Total La Payunia encompasses more than 800 volcanoes and is considered one of the volcanic areas with the greatest density and diversity in the world. Vast landscapes of colorful volcanic materials define the area, which is also a protected area for fauna and flora. The sheer wealth of volcanoes is a special reason to explore La Payunia as a natural area.
Castillos de Pincheira also tell the story of the power of erosion. The river and wind have shaped volcanic rock formations into towers and natural walls whose appearance recalls medieval castles. The formations lie 27 kilometers southwest of the city of Malargüe. At Pozo de las Ánimas, meanwhile, two sinkholes take center stage: underground rivers have eroded them, and each of the two green pools is almost 300 meters in diameter.
In the galleries of Caverna de las Brujas, water erosion and mineral deposits have created stalactites, stalagmites, veils, columns and coral formations. The areas visitors can see include Sala de la Virgen, La Gatera, Sala de la Estalagmita Gigante and Sala de los Encuentros. Each name provides a distinct point of reference within the cave, while the formations reveal how it was shaped geologically.
Lagoon, Birds and Visitor Requirements
Laguna Llancanelo is a provincial nature reserve and a 650-square-kilometer wetland. It lies on Ruta 186 at an elevation of 1,280 meters, 75 kilometers from the city of Malargüe. Flamingos, black-necked swans, herons and ducks are among the birds found there. The lagoon has been part of the Ramsar Convention since November 8, 1995.
Photo safaris and birdwatching are possible at Laguna Llancanelo. Visitors must request admission tickets in advance, and accompaniment by an authorized guide is mandatory. Check these access requirements before your trip. This will help you plan your visit in line with the specific rules for this protected area.
Winter Sports and Summer Activities
Las Leñas is one of the most important ski centers in Latin America. It offers slopes and lift-accessible off-piste areas. The longest uninterrupted descent on marked slopes is seven kilometers, and there are also 16 lifts. Winter sports on offer include cross-country skiing, snowboarding, freeride skiing, off-piste skiing and a freestyle park. The range of disciplines gives skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts different ways to enjoy their time on the snow.
In summer, Las Leñas offers trekking, zip-lining, climbing, rappelling, horseback riding and mountain biking. The shift between winter sports and summer activities shows the many different ways to experience this part of the department. Which activities suit your trip depends on what you are looking for: sports, geological features, birdwatching and cultural sites each offer a different way to discover Malargüe.
