In Puente Del Inca, a natural biomineral bridge spans the RĂo Cuevas. The town lies at an altitude of 2,730 meters in the Cordillera Principal. The natural monument, high-mountain landscape, and historical remains each offer a different side of a stay here. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you want to focus primarily on nature, history, or hiking.

Natural Monument in the Cordillera Principal

The Puente Del Inca site is protected as the Reserva Monumento Natural Puente del Inca, under Mendoza provincial law 6045. The climate is arid, temperate, and cold, and is influenced by the Cordillera de los Andes. Five hot springs reach temperatures between 33 °C and 38 °C; they are called Venus, Marte, Saturno, Mercurio, and Champagne. Populations of Vultur gryphus and Phegornis mitchellii live and breed in the natural monument. Both species are classified worldwide as Near Threatened (NT). Geology, hot springs, climate, and wildlife give the natural monument its diverse natural features.

Qhapaq Ñan and Local History

Puente Del Inca is part of the Qhapaq Ñan, the Andean road system that UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 2014. Another historical landmark is the ruins of the Termas Puente del Inca Hotel. Construction began in 1917; on August 15, 1965, an avalanche destroyed part of the hotel. Railway buildings and infrastructure are also among the town’s historic features worth preserving.

The hot springs also play a role in making items for sale: thermal water is used to coat items with precipitated mineral salts, which are then offered for sale to visitors. Together with the ruins and its place on the Qhapaq Ñan, this offers another perspective on Puente Del Inca: its history is reflected not only in buildings but also in the use of its thermal waters.

Viewpoint, Trails, and Orientation

The Puente Del Inca protected area is accessible via International Route 7 and is 2 km from the entrance to Parque Provincial Aconcagua. A long viewpoint offers a view of the natural bridge. Numerous artisan stalls and dining venues are located beside the viewpoint.

An authorized trail along the left bank of the RĂo Las Cuevas leads to the viewpoint and panoramic lookout of the natural monument. Check local conditions for this trail before your visit. A high-mountain hike starts in Puente Del Inca, follows the RĂo Cuevas, and continues to the Capilla Virgen de las Nieves. These offer different experiences: the viewpoint focuses on the bridge, while the hike leads to the chapel.

Puente Del Inca as a Place to Stay

If you are looking for a vacation rental in Puente Del Inca, you can choose where to stay based on your planned interests: the natural monument and hot springs, the Qhapaq Ñan and hotel ruins, or the viewpoint and high-mountain hike.
