Red rock landscapes, routes through vineyards and orchards, and vibrant textile traditions shape the opportunities for discovery in Coronel Felipe Varela. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the different highlights: Talampaya is known for its vast protected landscape, while scenic routes, viewpoints and craft centers each offer a different perspective.

Talampaya and the Region’s Landscapes

Talampaya National Park protects more than 213,000 hectares of the Monte de Sierras y Bolsones ecoregion. It lies in the center of La Rioja Province, between the departments of Coronel Felipe Varela and Independencia, along National Route 76. Within the broader La Rioja travel destination, the park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its striking landscape features include red sandstone cliffs reaching up to 200 meters high.

Other rock landscapes have their own distinctive character. The Cañón de Anchumbil is a natural attraction with huge, striking reddish rock formations. Recreational activities are possible in the area, as are opportunities to observe and learn about native flora and fauna. The Cañón del Triásico is located in the Banda Florida Municipal Reserve. These places broaden the region’s appeal with nature observation and varied landscapes.

Scenic Routes, Viewpoints and Time by the Water

The “Pagancillo Viejo” loop passes through vineyards, orchards and native vegetation, as well as by historic buildings. You can explore it on foot or on horseback with local guides from “Tranco Manso.” Since tour availability should be checked before your trip, it is a good idea to inquire when planning. Rather than focusing on a single viewpoint, the route brings together the landscape and traces of local architecture.

In Villa Unión, Mirador La Loma offers panoramic views of the town and is reached by climbing 136 steps. Embalse Lateral de Villa Unión is now used for walking and fishing. The experiences differ: at the viewpoint, the climb and views of the town shape the visit, while the reservoir is best suited to walking and fishing. In the Cañón de Anchumbil area, nature observation and recreational activities are the main highlights.

Weaving Traditions and Historical Connections

Traditional Criollo weaving is found in several settings. Cooperativa Unay preserves weaving techniques on a Palo-Plantado loom, as well as dyeing techniques using natural products. In Santa Clara stands the more than 100-year-old Casona de los Fajardo, where traditional Criollo weaving on a Palo-Plantado loom is also preserved. For several generations, the Fajardo family has maintained weaving and dyeing techniques of Indigenous origin. These details give the cultural side of a trip its own focus alongside the landscape experiences.

Guandacol is also associated with historic memorial sites. The Casa de Felipe Varela there is a distribution and stamping point for the Pasaporte Nacional Sanmartiniano in the Department of General Felipe Varela. Guandacol also issues the stamp for the 48th stage destination, “Paso de Comecaballos,” on the “Caminos de Libertad” program. The program connects this stage destination with one of the six Andean passes used by Zelada and Dávila’s “Expedición Auxiliadora” in 1817.

La Rioja in the Wider Regional Context

Visitors looking beyond Coronel Felipe Varela to La Rioja can also explore the Cuesta de Miranda. This 114-kilometer stretch of Route 40 connects Chilecito and General Felipe Varela. Viewpoints along the route provide opportunities to observe geological features, flora and fauna. In the broader travel destination, Talampaya’s protected landscape and a longer road connection with designated observation points stand alongside one another as distinct regional highlights.
