The administration of San Guillermo National Park is located in Rodeo. Anyone wishing to enter the national park must register there in advance. Check this requirement again before your trip. There are also clear points to consider beyond the park: watersports at Dique Cuesta del Viento, other attractions, and the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Chapel.

The dam, gorge, and basalt formations

Dique Cuesta del Viento is one of Rodeo’s attractions. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sport fishing are possible there. The Garganta Río Jáchal and the Basaltos Columnares are also among Rodeo’s attractions. This offers a range of interests: specific activities are available at the dam, while the gorge and basalt formations provide other destinations to consider locally.

The Santo Domingo de Guzmán Chapel

The Capilla Santo Domingo de Guzmán is a Provincial Historic Monument and part of the cultural and natural heritage of the Province of San Juan. Its postcolonial architecture features adobe walls and a wooden roof divided into two sections. The chapel was first mentioned in historical records in 1835. This cultural landmark can therefore be considered in terms of both its architectural style and its historical context: 1835 marks its first recorded mention, not the architecture described here.

Circular routes in San Guillermo National Park

Two described circular routes lead to different destinations from the administrative headquarters in Rodeo. The “Los Caserones” Circuit is a 350-meter walk among old corrals, with panoramic views of a granite outcrop. The “Punto panorámico” Circuit leads to a viewpoint at an altitude of 3,760 meters, where vicuñas and guanacos can be observed.

Both drives are listed as taking about five hours along winding roads; they are accessible only by four-wheel-drive 4x4 vehicles. The choice between the routes therefore depends mainly on the destination: Los Caserones focuses on the short walk and old corrals, while Punto panorámico offers a high-altitude viewpoint and the possibility of wildlife watching. Allow for the long drive and check access conditions before your trip. Advance registration in Rodeo is still required to enter the national park.

The wider setting: Departamento Iglesia

The broader destination of Departamento Iglesia also offers other cultural and landscape themes. The archaeological settlement of Angualasto is a National Historic Monument. A religious route includes the chapels of Achango, Rodeo, Tudcum, Angualasto, Bella Vista, Villa Iglesia, and Las Flores. For a different cultural perspective, the Circuito de tejido iglesiano features women weavers and their granddaughters continuing, preserving, and developing the traditional techniques of spinning and weaving.

The natural landscape of Departamento Iglesia includes San Guillermo National Park, which protects the Altos Andes, Puna, and Monte de Sierras y Bolsones ecoregions across 166,000 hectares. Another landscape feature is the Hongos de Tocota: formations created by erosion from white volcanic sandstone, reaching heights of up to ten meters. Together with Rodeo’s attractions, this regional context shows how a stay can be shaped around local destinations or a broader perspective on the culture, crafts, and landscapes of Departamento Iglesia.
