Bañado La Estrella takes center stage as a striking landscape: it is Argentina’s second-largest wetland and is considered one of Argentina’s Seven Natural Wonders. It is home to more than 500 bird species, including the jabiru, Matico, Ñacurutú, jacana, Urutaú, silver and great egrets, and roseate spoonbill. For nature enthusiasts, birdlife is a highlight in its own right when discovering Formosa.
The province lies in northeastern Argentina and, together with Chaco, northern Santa Fe, eastern Salta and Santiago del Estero, forms part of the Región Chaqueña. Formosa’s natural attractions include wetlands, protected landscapes and opportunities to observe wildlife.
Wetlands and wildlife viewing
The Reserva Natural Formosa protects around 9,005 hectares of the Chaco Semiárido and was established in 1968. Three interpretive trails and five strategically located viewpoints are designed for observing wildlife. This gives visitors several specific places to explore within the reserve: the trails focus on interpretation, while the viewpoints are geared toward wildlife viewing.
Parque Nacional Río Pilcomayo also combines trails with designated viewpoints. It has self-guided trails and viewpoints at Estero Catalina and the Río Pilcomayo. The park is home to 324 bird species. When comparing Formosa’s nature destinations, you can distinguish between the birdlife of Bañado La Estrella, the interpretive trails in Reserva Natural Formosa, and the self-guided trails and viewpoints in the national park.
Information about the protected areas offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: wildlife viewing, interpretive trails and viewpoints at named locations. Wetlands are another natural highlight; Bañado La Estrella combines its significance as a landscape with a diverse birdlife.
Handicrafts, history and collections
Formosa’s cultural offering includes four handicraft routes: wool, chaguar, palm and algarrobo. Casa de la Artesanía showcases works by the Wichí, Qom and Pilagá Indigenous communities who live in the province. These four materials and techniques provide a specific framework for the handicrafts, while Casa de la Artesanía offers a closer look at works from the province’s communities.
The Museo Provincial de Ciencias Naturales is located in Villa Escolar. It opened on September 8, 2013, and houses the most important paleontological collection in northern Argentina. Alongside the natural areas, the scientific study of nature is another subject visitors can explore in Formosa.
The Museo Histórico “San Francisco de Laishí” preserves objects and records relating to the history of the mission and the province of Formosa. Together with the paleontological collection, it offers a different way to explore the region: one museum focuses on historical heritage and collections, the other on natural history. Each museum has its own focus, so you can choose according to your cultural interests.
Regional cuisine and activities
Traditional dishes are served along the cultural routes, including Chivo a la estaca, stews, fish with a side dish, and dishes made with algarrobo flour. The selection ranges from meat dishes and stews to fish and foods made with algarrobo flour. It adds a culinary dimension to the handicraft themes covered by the cultural routes.
In Herradura, you can take excursions by motorboat and canoe. Sport fishing with catch and release is another activity offered in Formosa; licenses and local regulations may apply. If you plan to include these activities in your itinerary, check the applicable requirements in advance.
The Costanera de Formosa is officially called Avenida Costanera Vuelta Fermoza and is also known as “La Costanera.” At night, it features a show with dancing water fountains. As operating times may vary, check before your visit whether the show is running and when it takes place.
Getting there and finding accommodation
