Basavilbaso combines a self-guided walking tour with thermal baths and railway and cultural heritage. When planning your stay, you can choose between getting some exercise, swimming and exploring historical themes. A book collection in four languages and two synagogues add to the town’s cultural highlights.
Walking Tour and Thermal Baths
The self-guided walking tour of Basavilbaso is approximately 1,200 metres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Both details are important when planning your day: the length describes the route, while the approximate duration is the stated time frame for it. So take both figures into account rather than estimating the time from the distance alone.
The Termas de Basavilbaso have four swimming pools, including an indoor pool and a pool for children. There is also a spa and massage room. This offers an alternative to the walking tour: swimming pools as well as spa and massage facilities. Facilities and services may change; check what is currently available before your visit.
Railways and Local Cultural History
The Museo Riel Basavilbaso is a replica of a fourth-category railway station in the distinctive English style. The Antigua EstaciĂłn Gdor Basavilbaso was built in 1887; locomotive No. 43 stands on a plinth. The railway theme therefore includes a replica station, a station building with a recorded year of construction and a locomotive standing on a plinth.
The Biblioteca Lucienville has a book collection with books in Spanish, Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew. The Sinagoga Tefila L' Moisés is a monumental temple built in 1912 in the eclectic style. Another synagogue, the Sinagoga Beth o Beit Abraham, was built by craftsmen in 1917; it is popularly known as “Shill de los Arbetn” (“Synagogue of the Workers”). Thus, a multilingual book collection and two different building histories come together: the eclectic design of 1912 and the craftsmen’s building of 1917. The term eclecticism refers to a design that combines elements from different styles.
Uruguay as a Regional Context
The wider travel destination of Uruguay also has its own historical and landscape highlights. The Palacio San JosĂ© – Museo y Monumento HistĂłrico Nacional Justo JosĂ© de Urquiza is located in the Uruguay Department of Entre RĂos Province. It was the residence of Argentina’s first constitutional president and his wife, Dolores Costa.
Another regional highlight is the Parque Natural Provincial Islas y Canales Verdes del RĂo Uruguay. It is located in the Uruguay Department near Colonia ElĂa and protects more than 4,000 hectares of islands, wetlands and native forests. The palace and the nature park represent different themes within the wider travel destination of Uruguay: a historic residence and a protected landscape.
