San Alberto Department brings together a range of travel interests: in Nono, trails lead through town and along rivers, while museums and historic buildings offer insights into local culture. Panaholma offers a different focus with the RĂo Panaholma and its swimming area. Nearby, you’ll also find additional trails and sights dedicated to Brochero.
Cultural heritage in Nono and the surrounding area
In Nono, the “Casas con historia” walking tour brings together traditional adobe houses, general stores and a chapel dating from 1908. The Museo Rocsen displays more than 55,000 items from around the world and recreates scenes from different eras. If you’re interested in the history of the Indigenous population, nearby in Mina Clavero you’ll find the Museo Arqueológico Comechingón, which offers insights into their history and heritage.
The places dedicated to Brochero also have different focuses. The Museo Brocheriano has 16 rooms of photographs and objects that illustrate the faith, simplicity and dedication of Saint JosĂ© Gabriel Brochero. Nearby, the Parque Temático Brochero Santo offers a tour inspired by Brochero’s life, work and miracles; paths totaling 440 meters connect its different stops. The Sendero Cuesta Vieja de Brochero starts at Plaza Centenario, is 10.5 kilometers long and is classified as easy. Historically, the trail connected Panaholma with Villa del Tránsito, now Villa Cura Brochero. Also nearby, the Acueducto Los Chiflones channeled water from the RĂo Panaholma to Villa Cura Brochero for irrigation.
Choose hiking trails by duration and difficulty
If you’re comparing loop hikes by duration, there are two different options: the Costanera del RĂo Panaholma runs from the south bank promenade to the north bank promenade, takes two hours and is classified as easy. The Cerro de la Gloria loop takes three hours and passes natural waterfalls. In Nono, the Nono – Juntura de los RĂos loop starts at the main square and follows the lower part of town along the RĂo de Los Sauces to the confluence with the RĂo Chico de Nono. The RĂo de Los Sauces does not have a consistent water flow throughout the year.
The trails in Nono differ in distance, route and available guiding options: the Sendero del Arroyo follows the Arroyo Los Sanjuaninos for about five kilometers and can be hiked independently or with an authorized guide. The Sendero del Empedrado starts in the hamlet of Algarrobo and ends in the Altas Cumbres. It is eight kilometers long, with some sections considered moderate to moderately challenging. Nearby, the Sendero Cuesta Vieja is classified as easy and is 10.5 kilometers long. This lets you consider duration, distance and difficulty separately rather than treating them as equivalent.
Riverside scenery and local life
The RĂo Panaholma rises in the Cumbres de Achala and is fed by the Laguna Verde and Los Hornillos streams. It is known for its mesothermal water and beaches; its water is also described as crystal clear. Healing properties are attributed to it. There is a swimming area by the river in Panaholma. This riverside landscape makes for a different kind of outing from the museums and hiking trails in Nono.
In San Lorenzo, guided hikes along nature and cultural trails are available, along with walks along rivers and streams. Open folkloric dance workshops are also held there. Nearby, in Villa Cura Brochero, the Festival del Pastelitero takes place in the second week of February. It honors the vendors who sell pastelitos and the Pastelitero families. At Plaza Centenario, El RincĂłn del Pastelitero offers pastelitos and other products from the Familias Pasteliteras; check which products are available before your trip.
When choosing a hotel, you can start with the activities you’re interested in: Nono combines local history, museums and several hiking trails, while Panaholma offers a distinct riverside focus. San Lorenzo adds guided hikes and folkloric dance to the options.
