Historic sites, river landscapes and festival traditions are spread across several locations in Río Segundo Department. Oncativo offers both guidance on road connections and specific festival traditions; in Pilar, historic sites of remembrance stand alongside the Río Xanaes. Villa del Rosario adds further historical connections and a folklore festival. First, consider which places or dates will be the deciding factors for you. Then you can choose your accommodation based on the visits you have planned.
Places, Roads and River Landscapes
Oncativo is connected to the Córdoba–Rosario highway, provincial routes E-79 and S-353, and several rural roads. These connections offer practical guidance if Oncativo is the main focus of your plans. Take the road connections into account when planning your journey, then decide which other places to include in your trip.
The landscape around Pilar brings together hills, river and vegetation. The town borders the Río Xanaes to the north. Balneario Municipal offers amenities and the river’s cool water for a day by the river. If you plan to visit the bathing area, check its current accessibility before you go.
Historical Traces in Pilar and Villa del Rosario
In Pilar, the Capilla Histórica commemorates the place where General Belgrano handed over command of the army. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Pilar dates back to 1738. The Centro Cultural is housed in an old church. Pilar thus brings together several historical and cultural points of interest: the memory of Belgrano, an 18th-century parish church and a cultural center in an older church building.
In Villa del Rosario, Paso de las Tropas was a historic resting and encampment site for General Manuel Belgrano and his Army of the North troops. Other local attractions include the Basílica Menor Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the Primera Población and the Oratorio San José de los Ranchos. The Río Xanaes is also considered a natural tourism resource in Villa del Rosario. These sites range from a military historical landmark to religious and other local points of interest.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
For planning your dates, it is worth noting the different festival traditions. Oncativo celebrates every year on May 15 in honor of its patron saint, San Isidro Labrador. Another date to note is the 52nd Fiesta Nacional del Salame Casero, which took place in Oncativo from August 14 to 16, 2026. The three-day event featured food, culture, music and entertainment; admission was free. If you are planning a future trip, check the latest event dates.
This edition included a food fair with more than 40 exhibitors. Visitors could sample and buy artisanal salami, other cured meats and regional products.
In Villa del Rosario, the Festival Nacional de Folclore en el Agua is a traditional celebration. It had been held without interruption through its 58th edition. The department therefore offers different cultural points of interest: an annually dated festival in Oncativo, the specific program of an earlier salami festival, and the folklore tradition in Villa del Rosario.
