Rivers and hiking trails around Nono offer many ways to discover the town and its surroundings. The routes vary in length, starting point and character; cultural discoveries include the Museo Rocsen, public art and a historic walking tour. This gives you the choice of nature, history and events for your trip, without having to fit everything into a single outing.

Rivers and trails around Nono

The Río de los Sauces in Nono is calm and warm, with extensive beaches and shallow water. At the Río Chico de Nono, the water flows between large rocks and dense vegetation. Natural swimming pools and small, quiet spots to enjoy the water form there. The two rivers meet at Cerro Los Nonos, at the place also known as La Juntura de los Ríos. From there, they flow together toward Dique La Viña.

This river landscape is also the destination of the self-guided Sendero de la Juntura. The seven-kilometer trail starts at Plaza San Martín and leads to the confluence of the Río Chico and the Río de los Sauces. It is rated easy. River conditions can vary by season, which should be taken into account when planning your hike.

Hikes with different points of interest

The also self-guided Sendero del Arroyo is five kilometers long and rated easy. Its trailhead is 2.5 kilometers from the center of Nono. By contrast, the Sendero de la Juntura starts right at the main square and ends at the river confluence; the two trails therefore differ in both length and their stated starting and ending points.

The Sendero Las Chuñas is a circular trail in the area around Nono, 2.8 kilometers from the center. Along the way, there are views of the Altas Cumbres and ancient mortars carved into the rock, evidence of the heritage of the Indigenous peoples of the area. The trail therefore offers a different focus from the two routes that run alongside or lead to a river: here, mountain views and traces of history take center stage.

History, art and culture

The Museo Rocsen opened in Nono in 1969. Its collection includes more than 55,000 objects from around the world, and it also features recreated scenes from different eras. Those interested in the town’s history can gain another perspective on the “Casas con historia” walking tour, which takes in traditional adobe houses, general stores and a chapel dating from 1908. This tour is in the broader travel destination of Departamento San Alberto.

The community project Poesía Mural is also part of Nono’s cultural scene. The public art initiative involves poets, visual artists, local residents and municipal authorities. Another opportunity to experience music and tradition is the two-day Fiesta de la Tradición Serrana. The program includes folk music, traditional foods, folk dancing, a gaucho parade and an equestrian skill competition. Check the event dates for the year of your trip.

More activities and seasonal dates

Laberinto de Nono has six mazes, including a traditional 900-square-meter maze made of arborvitae. There are also skill and balance games, as well as a play area for younger children. It operates seasonally, so check the opening dates for your planned travel period.

Nono’s craft fair has about 75 craft stalls and around 15 stalls selling regional products. Categories include leatherwork, textiles, painted ceramics, knives and woodwork. The number of stalls may vary from one edition to another. Nono offers a wide variety of discoveries: river landscapes and trails sit alongside collections, historic buildings, art and regional crafts.
