Chaco landscapes and biodiversity

Traslasierra National Park is located in Minas Department, in the northwest of Córdoba Province. The park protects 105,000 hectares of the Dry Chaco ecoregion. A section of serrano Chaco forest, which is underrepresented in the protected-area system, can be seen on the western slopes of the Sierras de Pocho. The park’s size places it within the Dry Chaco, while the forest section adds a view of a specific habitat in the Sierras.

The wildlife also has a specific connection to the protected area: the endemic Córdoba tuco-tuco occurs in Traslasierra National Park. The Córdoba tuco-tuco is classified in a threat category at the national level. Its presence places the species in the park, while the threat category refers to its national classification.

Historical traces on the grounds of Estancia Pinas

Traslasierra National Park is located on the grounds of the former Estancia Pinas and preserves traces of Comechingón culture. A chapel dating from the 19th century stands on the grounds. The publicly accessible area of the Casco Histórico includes a visit to the antiguo Oratorio San Roque, which forms part of the park’s historic center and is considered cultural heritage of historical and cultural interest.

Hiking trails with different estimated times

Sendero Los Mistoles is an easy hiking trail with a walking time of about 15 minutes. Sendero Pinagasta is 850 meters long, gains 70 meters in elevation, takes approximately 45 minutes, and is of moderate difficulty. Only part of Sendero y Mirador Pinagasta is open; the round trip takes about one hour and includes a climb into the Sierra.

The trail information offers different ways to plan: a short, easy walk, a trail with a stated length and elevation gain, and a partially open round trip with a climb. If you mainly want to compare walking times, Los Mistoles is the shortest of the options listed, at about 15 minutes. Sendero Pinagasta also has a stated length, elevation gain, and moderate difficulty; for Sendero y Mirador Pinagasta, take into account that only part of the trail is open. Check the trail’s current availability before your visit.

Ecotourism and the wider Córdoba region

Together with the Camino de Los Túneles and the Chancaní Nature Reserve, Traslasierra National Park forms an important ecotourism circuit. Beyond its individual landscape, cultural, and hiking connections, the park is also part of a broader thematic context.

At the provincial level, Córdoba has Sierras, valleys, rivers, and lakes suited to trekking, canoeing, hiking, and horseback riding. The province’s cultural heritage offers another perspective: the Jesuit Block and five of its Estancias form a 38-hectare complex with religious and secular buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. These examples broaden the perspective on Córdoba, while Traslasierra National Park is the specific point of reference in Minas Department.
