La Nacional can be understood through the local history of its railway station and nearby Laguna El Cuero, which lies 15 kilometres to the south. In 1930, the station was authorised for various transport and communication functions; the town also had the Hotel de Juan B. Lannoudé as accommodation. Looking toward the lagoon brings together Ranquel naming history, a historic connecting route and the landscape of the Caldén ecosystem.
The railway station and accommodation in local history
The railway station in La Nacional, in the province of Córdoba’s General Roca Department, was authorised in 1930 for passenger transport, telegraphy, freight, livestock and parcels. The list includes travellers and communications as well as the transport of freight, livestock and parcels. This places the station’s role at the time in context through specific areas of passenger transport, communication and freight transport. The year clearly anchors this railway station history in 1930.
In the same year, La Nacional had the Hotel de Juan B. Lannoudé as accommodation. This keeps the town’s historical role as a place to stay distinct from present-day travel planning.
Laguna El Cuero: name, dimensions and historic routes
Laguna El Cuero, also known as El Cuero Chico, lies 15 kilometres south of La Nacional. It is elongated and stretches 900 metres from north to south. It is more than 300 metres wide and covers approximately 25 hectares. Together, its length, width and area describe the shape and approximate size of the lagoon in the vicinity of the town.
The Ranquel name for Laguna El Cuero is “Trülke Lavken”. “Trülke” means “Cuero”, and “Lavken” means “lagoon”; together, the name means “Laguna del Cuero”. Laguna El Cuero was also a settlement of several Ranquel chiefs. The name and settlement history give this nearby place its own historical dimension.
The lagoon was also an important landmark for 19th-century travellers: the Rastrillada del Cuero, a significant connecting route between the RĂo Cuarto frontier and the Mamil Mapu, ran there. In the historical account, the route connects two widely separated reference points with Laguna El Cuero. Its connection to the lagoon is part of the history of travel at the time.
The Pampas Caldén ecosystem provides the landscape context. Laguna El Cuero lies at its beginning; in the area, the ecosystem is represented by the so-called “Montes del Cuero”. Alongside the historic names and routes, the lagoon’s landscape connections are therefore also a focus.
Context in the General Roca Department
The General Roca Department offers further distinct cultural and commemorative sites as regional context. In Villa Huidobro, the paths and planted beds of the Plazoleta del Centenario del Departamento General Roca trace the geometry of the department. A monument commemorating the Malvinas War was inaugurated at the Juan Pablo II entrance in 2023. In Barrio Sur, a monolith together with a flagpole in the “2 de Abril” square commemorates the war’s veterans and fallen. Also in Villa Huidobro, the Sporting Club’s Sala Cine–Teatro reopened and resumed operations on 1 January 2018; it is historic cultural heritage of the municipality. In Italó, there is a theatre built by the Asociación Francesa, with a structure made of wood and fabric. Its seats are more than 100 years old. These examples complement La Nacional’s local history with further cultural and historical perspectives in the General Roca Department.
