Guided lavender tours, the history of Molino Harinero Andes and excursions to waterfalls give Trevelín and its surroundings a variety of highlights. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between things to do in town and seasonal or guided destinations in the surrounding area.

Nature and Excursions Around Trevelín

Trevelín is the gateway to Parque Nacional Los Alerces, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nature destinations in and around the town range from guided visits to trails with clearly specified times and distances.

In Trevelín, Tierra de Brotes is a new ecological lavender farm set in the Patagonian landscape. Guided tours take visitors through the fields. Seasonal opening hours may change, so check current hours before your visit. Lunch and picadas are also served outdoors. Groups must make reservations in advance.

Nearby, on Ruta Nacional 259 and 13 kilometers from the center of Trevelín, lies Campo de Tulipanes. It was developed and is maintained by the Ledesma family. Every October, the field produces more than a million tulips in bloom at the same time. Annual dates and visitor arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

At Cascadas Nant y Fall, 18 kilometers from Trevelín, the walk takes about 45 minutes. Arroyo Nant y Fall forms seven waterfalls, three of which can be visited in the protected area: Cascadas Larga, Mellizas and La Petiza.

Another option nearby is Comunidad Ancestral Sierra Colorada, 17 kilometers from Trevelín. There, outdoor activities can be combined with Mapuche culture. The Sendero de Micoturismo is 1.7 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 29 meters, and is considered easy to moderate and suitable for all age groups. Allow about two hours for the trail. Access depends on the weather and on guided-visit arrangements; check the conditions in advance. The times show a specific difference between the two walks: about 45 minutes at Cascadas Nant y Fall compared with around two hours on the Sendero de Micoturismo.

Regional History in Trevelín

The more than century-old building of Molino Harinero Andes houses the Museo Histórico Regional. In the first exhibition room of Museo Regional Molino Andes, the encounter between Indigenous peoples and Welsh immigrants is explored, along with the influential figures involved in the founding of present-day Trevelín. The visit thus leads from a historic building to topics in the town’s history, without requiring a visit to an entire exhibition program.

The National Park in Departamento Futaleufú

As context for the broader travel destination of Departamento Futaleufú: Parque Nacional Los Alerces was established in 1937 and declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2017. Within the park, the moderately difficult trail from Villa Futalaufquen to Puerto Limonao follows the shore of Lago Futalaufquen. It is four kilometers each way.

For navigation, it is important to distinguish between two route descriptions. From Esquel, Parque Nacional Los Alerces can be reached via Ruta Nacional 259 and Ruta Provincial 71 to Villa Futalaufquen. The southern area of the protected region can be reached from Esquel via Ruta Nacional 259, Trevelín and the road to Complejo Hidroeléctrico Futaleufú; this road is 45 kilometers long. The details refer to different areas of the park and help distinguish the broader region from destinations in Trevelín itself and its immediate surroundings.
