A colony of nearly half a million Magellanic penguins makes Punta Tombo a defining natural attraction of Dos Pozos. The area also includes the coastline of the Dos Pozos Nature Reserve and a historic post office on Provincial Route 1. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on penguin watching, guided nature experiences or local history. Rural accommodation is also available at the entrance to the protected area.
Penguins and Vantage Points at Punta Tombo
The Punta Tombo protected area is located in Paraje Dos Pozos, in the Florentino Ameghino Department of Chubut Province. It protects the largest continental colony of Magellanic penguins, with nearly half a million birds. The Sendero de la PingĂĽinera is a 3-kilometer circular trail with several viewpoints. There, you can observe and photograph penguins, their nests and their behavior during the breeding season.
The Centro de Interpretación in Punta Tombo offers a different perspective. Its exhibits take visitors on a thematic journey from the seabed to the surface and introduce the local wildlife and how it lives alongside the area’s fauna. While the trail focuses on observing penguins along a circular route, the center broadens the view to local wildlife as a whole.
The Punta Tombo protected area is open to visitors; check the current access conditions before your visit.
Coastal Wildlife and Guided Experiences
The Dos Pozos Nature Reserve protects around 13 kilometers of coastline. More than 200 southern elephant seals were counted there in summer; numbers can vary. La Antonieta offers guided visits to a colony, reached by a 10-kilometer route to the haul-out site. Visits are arranged for small groups at set times to avoid disturbing the animals’ coastal environment. Breeding harems can be observed during the peak season from September to November.
La Antonieta also organizes a moderate-difficulty trek by off-road vehicle to Cañadón del Paisano, 3 kilometers from the main house; the tour goes through the canyon and ends at Tehuelche ruins. Horseback rides to viewpoints in Bajo de Dos Pozos are available, accompanied by a local guide and booked in advance by email. Check reservations and availability before traveling.
After dinner, La Antonieta offers overnight guests a free night walk along Provincial Route 1. On the traffic-free road, away from light and noise pollution, you can admire the Patagonian sky and the Milky Way. As availability for this activity may change, it is a good idea to check shortly before your stay.
Postal History on Provincial Route 1
The former Estafeta de Correo del Paraje Dos Pozos dates back to 1900. In 2025, Chubut Province declared the historic Antigua Estafeta de Correos y Telégrafo de Dos Pozos and its associated property tangible cultural heritage. The post office is located at kilometer 234 of Provincial Route 1, at the entrance to the protected area and around 25 kilometers before its entrance.
Accommodation and Your Stay
La Antonieta offers rural accommodation at the entrance to the protected area in Dos Pozos. Restrooms are available at the main house; visitors who access the protected area through La Antonieta can also eat at the country inn. If you would like to stay here, check accommodation availability before your trip.
