Lago Epuyén is Epuyén’s main attraction and is located within Parque Municipal Puerto Bonito. The Reserva Natural de Usos Múltiples Lago Epuyén also focuses on this glacial lake. Epuyén is part of the Comarca Andina del Paralelo 42°. Along with the lake, you’ll find hiking trails, cultural sites and guided visits to workshops for your stay.

Lake, water sports and relaxation

Lago Epuyén is suitable for water sports. Another way to spend time by the lake is to follow the Sendero de las Playas, which runs along three beaches open to visitors for recreation. You can choose between activities on the water and a trail along these stretches of beach. The two options offer different experiences, and neither requires completing a single loop trail.

Hiking trails with different estimated durations

The Sendero La Condorera offers panoramic views of Lago Epuyén and the chance to spot Andean condors. The trail is considered challenging; the round trip to the viewpoint is estimated to take seven hours. The Sendero Bahía El Desafío has a different estimated duration: the hike starts at parking lot number 1 in Parque Municipal Puerto Bonito, is rated moderate and takes one hour to reach the destination.

These time estimates refer to different sections: for Bahía El Desafío, the duration is given for reaching the destination, while for La Condorera it specifically covers the round trip. This is important when choosing a trail based on the time you have available. The Sendero Arroyo Las Minas offers a 1,000-meter route that is open only to pedestrians and cyclists. The distance given describes the route, not the time it takes to walk.

Cultural sites and local experiences

Piedra Pintada, an archaeological site on the slope of Cerro Pilche, also known as Cerro Epuyén, is located in Parque Municipal Puerto Bonito. The Centro Cultural Antu Quillen is also in the park. It has provided a space for culture and tourism in Epuyén for more than 20 years. In addition to its natural and hiking attractions, the park offers visitors archaeological and cultural experiences.

Another cultural highlight is Stupa Samanthabadra, built in accordance with Buddhist teachings and traditions. Visitors can meditate there and walk clockwise around the stupa; please follow the instructions on site. If you’re interested in crafts, the Encuentro Provincial de Artesanos takes place in Epuyén every year on the third weekend in January. Artisans from across the country display and sell their work. The exact program may vary, so check the dates if you’d like to plan your trip around the event.

Agrotourism includes guided visits to workshops that make handmade preserves. This experience complements the natural and cultural attractions with a look at how regional products are made, without requiring a long hike.

Water activities nearby

Laguna Las Mercedes is near Epuyén, 12 kilometers from the urban area. It is used during the day. Activities there include kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding; a permit is required for sport fishing. If you’d like to fish, be sure to plan for this requirement. The lagoon offers another option for water activities, while Lago Epuyén itself remains the town’s main attraction and the setting for the water sports and beach experiences mentioned above.

When planning your visit, two questions can help: Would you like to spend time by the water or choose a trail with a clearly stated duration? And are you interested in a cultural visit or a local craft experience as well as the scenery? Epuyén offers a range of specific options, from the long, challenging La Condorera to shorter trails and cultural sites in Parque Municipal Puerto Bonito.
