In Biedma, the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés shapes a natural environment where Patagonian steppe, plains, and plateaus meet diverse wildlife. The protected area covers 887,775 hectares. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering the different locations and seasons: whale watching, coastal trails, and interpretation centers offer different ways to experience the peninsula.

A protected area between steppe and sea

The Ramsar wetlands of the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés include Golfo San José and Golfo Nuevo. They provide feeding and resting grounds for resident and migratory birds. The Península Valdés Biosphere Reserve also includes the protected areas of Punta Loma and Punta León, in addition to this protected area. UNESCO describes the Península Valdés as a globally significant area for the protection of marine mammals: it is home to breeding populations of endangered Southern right whales, as well as significant breeding populations of southern elephant seals and South American sea lions.

Wildlife watching at different times of year

The seasonal window for possible orca sightings varies by location. At Punta Norte, orcas are seen seasonally, mainly in March and April. When hunting young sea lions, they deliberately strand themselves on the shore. At Caleta Valdés, orcas can be seen seasonally in October and November, when southern elephant seal pups are present there. If you’re planning your trip around one of these sightings, check the seasonal dates in advance.

Other wildlife sightings are also tied to specific months. In the El Doradillo nature reserve, whales can be watched from shore from June to October. Magellanic penguins breed at Caleta Valdés from late September to mid-April. At the southern tip of the inlet, at Punta Cantor, there is also a colony of southern elephant seals. The different time periods can help you choose the nature experiences that best fit your travel plans.

Interpretation centers as a gateway to the landscape

The interpretation centers focus on different themes. Visitor facilities at the Punta Norte Interpretation Center include orca figures, information panels, reinforced boardwalks, and rest areas. At the Istmo Carlos Ameghino, themed rooms cover geology and geography, the steppe and marine mammals, southern right whales, and history. The center also has a renewed interpretation trail within the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés.

The Isla de los Pájaros Interpretation Center features 3D bird displays, an environmental library, and renovated outdoor boardwalks. Together with the center at the Istmo, it offers a different perspective on the region than outdoor wildlife watching, focusing on the stories behind the landscape and its species.

Puerto Pirámides: a starting point and coastal town

Puerto Pirámides is the only urban center within the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés and serves as a starting point for excursions to the peninsula’s attractions. The main visitor activity is whale watching by boat, particularly to see southern right whales. This activity is seasonal, so check current availability and the right time to visit before your trip.

Experiences in Puerto Pirámides also include coastal hikes and snorkeling trips with sea lions. Diving experiences are offered year-round; snorkeling and diving with sea lions are also among the activities mentioned. Check operators’ conditions and offerings in advance. The town’s culinary scene includes seafood dishes such as gratinated scallops, local shellfish, and grilled trout.

Getting there and finding your way around

You can reach Puerto Pirámides via Provincial Route No. 2, which leads from National Route No. 3 into the Península Valdés. Provincial Route No. 42 is the main access road to El Doradillo. As road conditions and regulations may change, check the latest travel information before your trip.

The Caleta Valdés visitor area has accessible paths for people with reduced mobility and accessible restrooms. If these facilities are important to your plans, check their current condition before your visit.
