Local History at the Plaza and Chapel
Pontevedra was founded mainly by immigrants toward the end of the 19th century and remains part of the Partido de Merlo. A specific link to the town’s history is Plaza Padre Juan Markic. It is named after the Yugoslav priest Padre Juan Markic, who served at the Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción de Pontevedra from 1954 to 1983.
Another historic reference is at the intersection of Avenida UniĂłn and Calle Pola in Barrio 5 de Marzo. There stands the Ermita de la Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa, built in 2019 at the initiative of local residents and the Catholic community. The plaza commemorates a person through its dedication; the chapel grew out of a local initiative.
Festivals with Different Focuses
At the Feria del Encuentro Cultural, held in Pontevedra in August 2019, there were more than 60 handicraft stalls and 30 stalls offering national and international cuisine. Food trucks were also present, local bands performed, and there were game stalls.
A celebration of May 25 in Pontevedra in 2019 had a different focus: traditional associations took part in a procession, and traditional dances were performed. The fair brought together stalls, food, music, and games; the May 25 celebration centered on the procession and dancing. Both events took place in 2019. Plaza Padre Juan Markic: Play and Exercise
A municipal description from 2021 mentions themed play equipment at the plaza for children aged four to twelve. Another municipal report from the same year lists a fitness area, a calisthenics area, and LED lighting. Calisthenics refers to exercises using your own body weight, describing a specific form of exercise alongside the more general fitness area. The plaza thus combines play facilities for the stated age group with different areas for exercise. If you plan to use one of the listed areas, check the facility’s current condition before your visit.
Leisure with Access Requirements
Complejo Recreativo Sanidad includes a 14-hectare park, sports courts for football, volleyball, basketball, bocce, papi fútbol, and padel, as well as a 35 m children’s pool and a 120 m adults’ pool. The facility is intended for members and their families; separate requirements apply to guests. Compared with the play and exercise areas described for the plaza, the complex offers several specifically named sports and separate pools for children and adults. Confirm the requirements for guests before including it in your plans.
Nurseries and Infusions
A municipal report dated August 3, 2023, describes a guided visit to nurseries in Pontevedra for members of senior centers. The tour ended with a tasting of various infusions. Unlike the food stalls at the fair, this tasting was part of a guided tour for a specifically named group.
