A trip to Carmen de Patagones offers two distinct highlights: cultural heritage and leisure by the water. The old town, historic buildings and museums provide insights into the town’s history, while activities on the Río Negro include swimming, fishing, water sports and walks. You can plan your days around the things that interest you most.

Old Town and Historic Heritage

On July 21, 2003, the old town of Carmen de Patagones was designated a “Poblado Histórico Nacional” (National Historic Settlement) under National Decree No. 401. The area comprises 24 irregularly laid-out blocks. The historic settlement area includes the Torre del Antiguo Fuerte, colonial ranches, the Cuevas Maragatas and the parish church. These buildings and sites represent different parts of the designated historic area.

The Nuestra Señora del Carmen temple is an important landmark in the town’s history. It was consecrated in 1780 and was the first church in Carmen de Patagones and in the Argentine Patagonia region. Its date and status as the first church set it apart as part of the historic heritage; at the same time, the parish church is one of the sites included in the national historic settlement area.

Museums with Distinct Areas of Focus

The Museo Histórico Regional “Emma Nozzi” is located in the historic center. Its collection is spread across three buildings designated National Historic Monuments: the Casa Histórica del Banco Provincia, the Casa Cagliero and the Rancho “La Carlota.” This arrangement is a useful point of reference if you are exploring the region’s cultural heritage.

The Museo Salesiano “Monseñor Fagnano,” which opened in 1997, has a different focus. Its collections include items donated by local residents, among them a dalmatic belonging to Monseñor Cagliero and marriage and baptismal registers from the local parish. The textiles and books give the collections distinct features: alongside a religious garment, they include records of parish life.

The Prefectura Naval Argentina presents its historical and current activities in Carmen de Patagones. Exhibits include uniforms, models, weapons, works of art and nautical objects. These displays add exhibits related to the Prefectura and the nautical world to the religious and regional history collections.

Guided Tours and Leisure on the Río Negro

Guided tours of the historic settlement are held daily throughout the year and last about an hour and a half. The meeting point is the Museo Regional Emma Nozzi at J. J. Biedma No. 64. If you plan to join a tour, check the schedule before your visit. This will help you factor the approximate duration and stated meeting point into your day.

The Río Negro is also known as the Río de los Sauces and Currú Leuvú. Its calm waters near Carmen de Patagones are suitable for swimming, fishing and water sports; walks, relaxation and tourism are also among the listed leisure options. The waterfront in Carmen de Patagones is used for tourism and recreation. The Fiesta Provincial de la Soberanía Patagónica adds a cultural dimension: it commemorates the defense of Patagonian sovereignty on March 7, 1827, and is historically linked to the identity of Carmen de Patagones.
