Morón’s cultural and historical character includes Plaza del Libertador General San Martín, the Monumento a la Independencia Nacional and the relief murals at the Palacio Municipal. Museums are dedicated to the cathedral and aviation; the Reserva Natural Urbana de Morón is also nearby.
Plaza and Monument in Morón
Plaza del Libertador General San Martín was designated a National Historic Site by a national decree dated August 16, 2022. The Monumento a la Independencia Nacional is located in the plaza and was inaugurated in 1937. These dates refer to different things: the plaza was designated in 2022, while 1937 is the year the monument was inaugurated. Those interested in historical heritage can take note of both the plaza’s national designation and the monument’s specific inauguration date.
Art, Museums and Aviation
The exterior walls of the Palacio Municipal feature four relief murals by artist and sculptor José Fioravanti. The number and placement of the works make the façade itself a point of artistic interest: they are four reliefs on the outside of the building, not an arrangement of rooms as in a museum.
The Museo de la Catedral has three rooms: an ornamental room, a documentary room and the Capilla de la Aflicción. The Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica displays aircraft in two hangars and on an outdoor platform. The ways they present their collections therefore differ: one has three rooms with distinct focuses, while the other displays aircraft in hangars and outdoors. If you are choosing between art and museum themes, these are two clearly distinct focuses; the aviation museum centers on aircraft, while the rooms of the Museo de la Catedral are organized by their respective designations.
Nature Nearby
The Reserva Natural Urbana de Morón is located in Castelar Sur, near Morón, and covers 14.5 hectares. It includes areas of Pampas grassland, native woodland typical of the tala forests of Buenos Aires Province, as well as spontaneous woodland, or neo-ecosystems. Exotic species predominate over native ones in these neo-ecosystems. The nature reserve thus encompasses different landscape and woodland types; this distinction from the plaza’s and museums’ cultural and historical focus may be particularly helpful when choosing what interests you.
More Culture and History in Partido de Morón
The history of Mansión Seré in Partido de Morón also offers several perspectives across time. The mansion originally belonged to Leocadia Seré, daughter of a Basque immigrant and founder of Quinta Seré. A two-story French-style palace was built on the estate in 1900 using imported European materials. The former grounds are now home to Casa de la Memoria y la Vida, the former CCD “Mansión Seré.” The property’s history, its architecture and the memorial site today represent different chapters in this place’s story.
Partido de Morón also offers several cultural institutions with different visitor arrangements. The cultural and historical archive of Museo de Morón – MuMo can be visited by appointment; arrange your visit before traveling. Villa Mecenas is a visual arts space in Morón. Espacio Cultural y Comunitario Paracone is a cultural space reclaimed for local residents, offering artistic activities. Check Villa Mecenas’s opening arrangements and Paracone’s current activity schedule before visiting.
