In the Partido de Olavarría, open plains in the west give way to low Sierras in the east. They belong to the Tandilia system and reach a maximum height of 300 metres. This means two distinct landscapes lie side by side: largely flat areas and low hills. When planning your trip, first consider whether you are most interested in scenery, hiking trails or the history of the towns.

Getting there and finding your way around

The Partido de Olavarría is accessible via National Route 226 and Provincial Routes 51 and 60. Olavarría bus station is served by eleven medium- and long-distance bus routes. Check current schedules and road conditions before you travel so your plans reflect the services available and the situation on the roads at the time.

Scenery and outdoor activities

In Sierras Bayas, you can hike trails in the surrounding Sierras. The Sendero de las Vías is more than a kilometre long and connects sculptures, old mine carts and themed walking routes. Alongside the scenery, there are specific features that give the trail its character. Sierras Bayas is also home to lakes in former quarries. They are part of a landscape whose present-day form recalls its quarrying past.

Near Olavarría, the Reserva Natural de la Defensa Cerro Largo preserves a remnant of the serrano grasslands that form part of the Tandilia system. The 47-hectare Bioparque “La Máxima” serves as an alternative habitat for wild animals. It is dedicated to the conservation and reintroduction of threatened native species, as well as environmental education for visitors. If you are more interested in water sports than hiking trails, Laguna Blanca Grande nearby offers water sports. These places have different focuses: Sierras and trails, a protected landscape remnant, species conservation or activities on the water.

Museums and local history

Colonia Hinojo, also known as “Kaminka”, was the first Volga German settlement in Argentina and is now the largest colony in the Partido de Olavarría. The Museo Municipal Ariel Chiérico opened there on 21 February 1998. Its permanent exhibition displays records, ordinances, resolutions and laws from 1875 to 1920 relating to the history of the immigrants. The museum also preserves traditional celebrations. The annual Kreppelfest brings together traditional German cuisine, music and dancing.

Former railway station buildings also tell the story of the towns. The Museo Municipal La Estación de Hinojo is housed in a former station building dating from 1883 and opened as a museum in 2011. Its symbol is the original sound of a train bell. In Sierras Bayas, the Museo Municipal de la Estación displays objects relating to the history of the town since its founding in 1879, as well as the San Martín factory and descendants of the Catriel. The Museo de la Piedra “Emma Occhi” in Sierra Chica offers a different perspective on local identity: its permanent exhibition focuses on the town and the work of stonemasons. You can also visit old lime factories in Sierras Bayas.

Other stops add to this picture with smaller, specific collections. The Museo Mapis displays objects from the local school, club and chapel. Nearby, the Museo Municipal Dámaso Arce showcases works by silversmith Dámaso Arce. In Colonia Nievas, the Capilla San Miguel Arcángel is considered the oldest church in the Partido de Olavarría. You can choose between immigration history, railway and industrial history, local collections and religious heritage, depending on which aspects of the towns interest you most.
