Lobos offers different ways to spend your stay: at the Laguna, wetlands, birdlife and water activities take center stage; in the city, museums, historic architecture and a varied cultural program shape the scene. When planning, consider whether you would like to set aside more time for nature or for the city’s cultural history.

Lagoon and Nature

Laguna de Lobos covers 800 hectares and is a natural wetland and a reservoir for native flora and fauna. Its vegetation-rich surroundings are home to a wide variety of wild birds. Water sports and other water activities are also among the options described at the lagoon. Its classification as a wetland in Latin America is based on characteristics of salinity and water levels; these characteristics also create a habitat for great biodiversity.

Nature watching and water activities offer different experiences: the birdlife and vegetation make the natural area interesting, while the lagoon is also suitable for water sports. The history of fishing offers insight into how the area has been used: commercial fishing was discontinued in the early 1940s and recreational fishing was introduced. At an event in 2018, the program included sailboats, kayaking, canoeing, rowing and kayak fishing.

Museums and Architecture in Lobos

The Museo y Biblioteca Juan Domingo Perón is located in the former birthplace of General Juan Domingo Perón, who was born there on October 8, 1895. The site includes four rooms, a courtyard of plaques and a historic fig tree dating from 1890. The museum is designated a Provincial and National Historic Monument. Its collections include Perón’s furniture and personal belongings, books by him and by people who contributed to his education, as well as a significant photo collection.

The Museo HistĂłrico y de Ciencias Naturales Pago de los Lobos brings together regional history and natural history collections. These include fossils, taxidermied native and non-native animals, mollusks, fish and fossilized flora. The museum also preserves the values, customs and traditions of the town of Lobos through documents, tools, and liturgical and educational objects. The collections therefore offer different perspectives, from natural history to the traditions of the town.

The buildings also showcase a variety of architectural styles. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen is Neo-Gothic; its present appearance was shaped by a major renovation that included, among other things, a 37-meter-high side tower. The Palacio Municipal and the Club Social Lobense are designed in the Art Deco style. The club was formerly called Sociedad Orfeón Lobense. Plaza 1810 is designated a National Historic Site. Together, these examples contrast Neo-Gothic church architecture with Art Deco buildings.

The Cine Teatro Italiano in Lobos offers Argentine and commercial films, commercial plays and productions featuring local actors. Its program also includes exhibitions, conferences, orchestras, ballets, concerts and operas. If you plan to attend a particular screening or event, check the current program locally.
