Art and history as a thematic selection

Art, crafts, and the railway offer different perspectives on the cultural history of the Partido de General Las Heras. Antonio Berni’s works lead to religious imagery and the time in which it was created, the museums to works of art and the history of crafts, and the railway sites to collections and historic heritage. For planning your trip, it is helpful to keep these themes distinct: each of the places mentioned focuses on a different subject.

Berni: Christian imagery and contemporary life

At the Capilla del Instituto San Luis Gonzaga, Antonio Berni’s paintings “La Crucifixión” and “El Apocalipsis” were inaugurated on June 21, 1981, the feast day of Saint Luis Gonzaga. Berni also painted murals there that same year. The two paintings draw on familiar Christian iconography while also incorporating the reality of the time in which they were created into the figures depicted. The works therefore invite viewers to look beyond religious motifs: the figures also root them in a specific present. Those interested in art can consider both aspects together—the familiar imagery and the historical context embodied by the people depicted.

Art collection and saddlery

The Museo Esteban Semino, at Dr. Angel Chiocconi 872 in General Las Heras, has a collection of more than 150 works of art. It displays works by local artist Esteban Semino and other Argentine artists. The collection thus brings together works by a local artist and those by other artists from Argentina. The Museo Los Tres de Carlos takes a different approach: tools and other objects from his surroundings convey the life of saddler Carlos Chiappa. Here, the focus is on a specific craft and the objects associated with it. The two museums therefore have distinct approaches: one collection features works by several artists, while the other museum focuses on a craft and one person.

Railway heritage in Villars and Plomer

The Museo Ferroviario Villars opened on October 24, 2008, and was the first railway museum in the Partido de General Las Heras. It preserves documents and objects from the railway’s heyday. The Estación de Ferrocarril de Plomer is a different point of reference: it is considered historic heritage of the Partido and has reopened. These sites illustrate two types of railway heritage. The museum conveys the railway’s past through documents and objects; at the station itself, the focus is on its status as historic heritage. Villars and Plomer are the respective places associated with these different aspects of the Partido’s railway history.

Cultural venue, getting there, and regional cuisine

The Cine-Teatro de la Sociedad Española in General Las Heras was also declared a historic monument because of its heritage value. After it reopened, artistic performances, theater productions, and film screenings were planned. The history of the theater is therefore another cultural theme of the area, alongside works of art and collections.

General Las Heras is accessible via the Sarmiento railway line. Check the current timetable before your trip so you can plan your journey accordingly. In the wider region, restaurants serving typical dishes in old and attractive buildings are part of the tourist offering. This adds a look at regional food culture and historic buildings to the area’s art and railway history.
