Along the coast of General Alvarado, people surf at Complejo Playa Bonita, La Najada, the Muelle and the Pomol. There are also two ways to fish: in the coastal towns, you can fish from shore or by boat; authorized operators offer boat fishing trips. The activities therefore differ not only in the experience they offer, but also in whether you prefer to fish from shore or from the water.
Rocas Negras is two kilometers from the center of Mar del Sud. The beach is known for its abundant fish. Notable features include its black rocks and the marine life found there: mussels, sea anemones, seahorses, small crabs and mollusks. This gives the place a different coastal feel from the surf spots mentioned above.
Centinela del Mar is distinguished by its largely unspoiled, secluded beaches, away from the noise of the city, and its natural surroundings. Another distinctive feature of the landscape is the planted pine forest at Vivero DunĂcola Florentino Ameghino. It covers about three hectares. Both features give nature in General Alvarado a place of its own alongside activities on the water.
Museums, History and Culture
The Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Miramar “Punta Hermengo” has eight galleries and a paleontology lab. Visitors can watch technicians prepare fossil remains there. The exhibits and the visible preparation work offer different points of interest: you can explore both the displays and the work being done on the fossils.
In Mechongué, the Museo y Biblioteca Municipal y Popular de Mechongué is housed in the train station, which took on this role after its restoration in 1996. The building hosts lectures, courses, craft activities and recreational programs for all ages. Next to the railway museum is a 600-meter fitness trail with exercise equipment—another way to incorporate exercise into your stay.
Religious sites also offer distinct visitor experiences. The Gruta de Lourdes at Vivero DunĂcola Florentino Ameghino is an open-air Catholic shrine, open to the public free of charge. The VĂa Crucis del Bosque, with its 14 stations, can be visited year-round. The main altar at Capilla Nuestra Señora de Lourdes also features a statue of Christ, a 19th-century German sculpture.
In Mar del Sur, the Boulevard Atlantic Hotel recalls the history of the seaside resort: it was built in the 1880s and declared a municipal historic monument in 1988. Visitors can view it from the outside. In Villa Balnearia Mar del Sud, the Teatro del Sur is an event venue with room for 150 people. The two places offer different cultural highlights—historic architecture and a space for events.
Local Experiences and Getting Around
In Mechongué, the Club Social y Deportivo Mechongué organizes the Fiesta del Camionero y el Agricultor every year. In Miramar, residents and tourists use Paseo Punta Hermengo for relaxing walks and fitness activities. For another glimpse of local life, visit the Feria Verde at the intersection of Av. 40 and 37: it offers natural products from family farms practicing agroecology, including seasonal vegetables, preserves, jams, honey and sourdough baked goods.
