Two very different types of routes provide a practical framework for planning a trip to Coronel Suárez: the self-guided Sendero Ribera del Río Sauce Grande is about one kilometer long, while the Circuito Peralta Bonete stretches for 32 kilometers and can be traveled by bicycle or vehicle. Historic sites, museums and the landscape of the streams also offer their own points of interest for a trip through the partido.

History and Culture in the Towns

In Pueblo Santa María stands La Casa del Fundador, a house dating from 1887 that belonged to Joseph Schneider. He was a member of one of the town’s 25 founding families. A municipal decree dated September 13, 2024, declared the house a historic site because of its historical and cultural significance. On display are objects and agricultural tools that illustrate the culture and working life of the residents of the German colonies. The site offers a craft brewery and food service; visits and events must be arranged in advance.

The Santa María Village Museum is located in the Centro Cultural “Héctor Maier Schwerdt.” It has four rooms and an outdoor exhibition of agricultural tools. Visitors are advised to arrange their visit in advance. During the 2025 patron saint festivities, the Asociación de Turismo Comunitario Santa María led a historical and architectural tour. A 2024 cultural program also featured the Iglesia Santa María and the grotto at the town entrance on a tour, presenting them as expressions of the Catholic faith of the third German colony.

Cultural sites in Coronel Suárez also offer insight into different aspects of the town’s history. The Museo de la Ciudad, which opened in 2025, was established to preserve and share the town’s history; it is dedicated to the entire community, especially schools. The Biblioteca Sarmiento was formerly the headquarters of the Logia Masónica Abnegación and preserves its tunnels and liturgical objects. The synagogue in Coronel Suárez is one of the most significant Jewish temples in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province. The Mercado Municipal de las Artes is a cultural venue in the town.

Attractions in Colonia Tres include the Gruta Nuestra Señora de Fátima, the Iglesia Natividad de María and the Museo Parque la Palmera. In San José, tour groups visited the Iglesia San José Obrero as part of a historical and cultural tour. These places complement the museums and cultural sites with religious and local history.

Trails and Landscapes

In Villa La Arcadia, the Sendero Ribera del Río Sauce Grande is a self-guided walking trail about one kilometer long. It starts opposite the Eco Plaza “Hortensia Pocha López” and ends at the ford at Balneario “La Hoya.” The trail focuses on protecting the natural environment and the natural heritage of the Río Sauce Grande. The Eco Plaza has play equipment, benches and waste bins made of recycled plastic lumber.

The signposted Circuito Peralta Bonete offers a different scale of excursion. The 32-kilometer route can be traveled by bicycle or vehicle. According to the route description, views along the way include the Pillahuinco mountain range, Cerro Bonete and streams. Its length, mode of travel and scenery clearly distinguish this tour from the short, self-guided trail along the Río Sauce Grande.

The streams of Cura Malal also shape the region’s connection to nature: their banks have been designated “Paisajes Protegidos” under a 2021 municipal ordinance. Nearby, Balneario Curamalal lies on the bank of a stream and is considered a family recreation area. The partido’s tourism plans also include the German colonies, rural tourism and nature tourism associated with the Sierras.

Polo as Part of Local History

The Coronel Suárez Polo Club was founded in 1929 in the Partido de Coronel Suárez. Between 1934 and 1981, it won a total of 24 titles at the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo. The club grounds include seven polo fields with boards and sprinkler irrigation; the season runs from January to September. Its tournament program includes the Copa General Manuel Belgrano, the Tres 3 de Febrero, the Copa de Menores Juan Carlos Alberdi (“Belgranito”), the Copa Internacional “Juan Carlos Harriott” and an international youth tournament.

When choosing places to visit, you can focus on the topics that interest you: local history and museums, cultural sites in the colonies, polo, or trails of different lengths through the landscape. This keeps the short nature trails and the longer route distinct options rather than conflating them into one route.
