In Chascomús Partido, the lagoon and the cultural heritage of the city of Chascomús take center stage on a journey of discovery. The Laguna de Chascomús covers 3,000 hectares; museums, historic buildings and cultural walks also trace the town’s history. When planning your trip, you have a clear choice: spend time by the water and get active, take guided tours, or explore architecture and local history. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay.

The lagoon and getting active: on the water and on land

The Laguna de Chascomús is one of the most significant bodies of water in Buenos Aires Province and the largest in its system. Activities on the water include kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing. Local operators rent equipment, offer private lessons and run guided outings. This gives you a choice of activities and formats, rather than limiting your day at the lagoon to just one way of exploring. Availability may change, so check what’s on offer during your stay in advance.

Regattas are also held on the lagoon throughout the year. If you’d like to attend a particular event, it’s a good idea to check the dates before your trip. On land, there are routes for cycling, running and walking along the shore and in nearby parks. The Camino de Circunvalación de la Laguna is a 31-kilometer route. Water sports, lakeside trails and the longer route offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

Cultural history in Chascomús

The cultural walks explore different aspects of the city’s history. One route takes in the places and squares that make up the Camino de Santiago in Chascomús. The railway route includes the Centro Cultural Municipal Vieja Estación, which hosts various activities and exhibitions. The Museo Ferroviario also has a specialized archive of documents on railway history, a part of Chascomús’s local history.

At the Museo Pampeano, you’ll find a wide-ranging collection featuring gaucho objects made from various materials, daguerreotypes, coins and medals, weapons, clothing, and archaeological remains from Chascomús Partido. Free guided tours are available for a walk through the historic center and a visit to the museum. As availability may change, it’s a good idea to confirm the dates for your visit.

Individual buildings also tell stories of different eras. The Palacio Municipal of Chascomús was inaugurated in 1940. Its distinctive Neocolonial style is associated with the Art Deco work of Francisco Salamone. The Casa de Casco was built in 1831 and is an example of a period “casa de alto” (two-story house). Its characteristic architectural details include adobe and brick walls up to 70 centimeters thick, a folding staircase and hardwood latticework.

Plaza Independencia is considered the founding site of Chascomús and is a historic place surrounding the former fort. The Mausoleo de los Caídos en la Batalla de Chascomús is a National Historic Monument. It honors the fighters who fell on November 7, 1839. Another important part of the cultural heritage is the Capilla de los Negros: founded in 1862 by the Nueva Hermandad de Morenos Bayonbé de Invenza, it served as a meeting place for the Afro-Chascomús community, for spiritual celebrations and for preserving its culture.

More experiences and practical planning

A visit to the Estación Hidrobiológica complements the lagoon-focused attractions with a look at research and the environment. The station studies pejerrey; its fry are raised in the laboratory mainly from September to December for later release into the lagoon. An aquarium with native fish is located in a learning room. The station also offers informative talks about the environment and the lagoon ecosystem to the general public and school groups.

For a leisurely browse, visit the Paseo de los Artesanos y Emprendedores, where handmade goods are sold at a craft and small-business market. The market is open on weekends and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. As the schedule may change, it’s best to check the details for your visit. This makes it possible to plan around culture, nature and local offerings according to the dates you’ll actually be visiting, without having to fit every activity into the same day.

Chascomús can be reached directly via Autovía 2. Another road connection is Provincial Route No. 20, from the city’s northwest.
