Capitán Sarmiento offers several ways to explore local history and rural experiences. The Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal focuses on documents and objects related to the town’s founding and development. Walks across the Pampa plains, visits to farms and estancias, and the urban nature reserve Parque del Este round out the experience. When planning your trip, you can choose between a focus on museums and history or on nature and rural experiences.
Local History, Railways and Flags
The Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal de Capitán Sarmiento presents local heritage through documents and objects related to the town’s founding and development. The archive includes, among other things, railway materials and documents. The Sala de la Bandera Bonaerense provides information about the finalists and other participating flags, their designers, and the process of creation, selection and announcement.
Another link to railway history is the “CAPITÁN SARMIENTO LA ESTACIÓN” route. It follows the grounds of the railway station, which closed in 1992 and was converted into a history museum. The route is a 45-minute walking tour, giving you a clear idea of how much time to allow.
Pampa, Nature and Polo
Parque del Este is Capitán Sarmiento’s urban nature reserve, Reserva Natural Urbana. Rural experiences in Capitán Sarmiento include visits to farms and estancias, sulky rides, and walks across the Pampa plains. Options range from a walk through the landscape to visits and rides in the countryside.
Polo is also part of the local scene. Handicap, open and simultaneous polo competitions are held on the fields of El Trébol Polo Club. El Trébol organizes an annual tournament in April: the Abierto is played for the “Charro Mexicano” trophy, while the handicap competition is played for the Copa Miguel Duggan cup. If you are considering traveling for the tournament, check the specific dates and visitor arrangements in advance.
