In winter, the unusual phenomenon known as “Nieve salada” covers the shores of Lake Epecuén: the cold causes sulfate to crystallize and coat the shoreline. Together with the birdlife and traces of history, Adolfo Alsina Partido offers different perspectives for a trip. When planning, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on nature or on the cultural sites in Carhué.

Lake Epecuén: Salt and Birdlife

Lake Epecuén is a natural floatation spa and ten times saltier than the sea. The wintertime “Nieve salada” is a distinctive natural phenomenon: sulfate crystallizes in the cold and covers the shore. The lake’s unusual properties and this seasonal process are both highlights.

Lake Epecuén is also important for wildlife. It is home to the second-largest breeding colony of Chilean flamingos in the Americas. It also serves as a stopover for thousands of Wilson’s phalaropes migrating south from Canada. The breeding colony and migration stopover describe two distinct roles of the lake: it is both a habitat and a station on a long journey.

Villa Epecuén: Flood History and Remembrance

Villa Epecuén was flooded in 1985 after the protective embankment that shielded the town gave way. The ruins of Villa Lago Epecuén are listed as a provincial historic monument in the cultural heritage of Buenos Aires Province. Villa Epecuén is regarded as an icon of local tourism and its most visited attraction.

The Lake Epecuén Interpretation Center is housed in the only building to survive the flood: Epecuén railway station on the Sarmiento line. The center includes an audiovisual presentation. The ruins and this interpretation site thus offer different ways to explore the history of the flood.

Cultural History in Carhué

In Carhué, the Museo Casa de la Ultima Fortinera preserves the building and the memory of Domiciana Correa, described as the last fortinera. The museum’s rooms focus on the history of Fuerte General Belgrano, the role of women in the Campaign to the Desert, and the restoration and revitalization of the ranch house. These topics give the visit a historical focus that goes beyond the building’s history.

Carhué’s Municipal Palace is a National Historic Monument. It was designed in 1938 by Francisco Salamone. The former Carhué Municipal Slaughterhouse was also inaugurated in 1938. The Museo Regional Dr. Adolfo Alsina offers another historical point of reference: it opened at its current location on January 21, 1971, and is municipally administered. The monument, former slaughterhouse, and museum each offer a different way to explore local history.

Nature Trail and Planning Your Time

The Sendero del Molle is located at Camping Municipal La Chacra in Carhué and is dedicated to ecotourism. The trail takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes to walk, and a rural museum complements the experience. Its approximate duration is a practical guide when deciding how much time to set aside for this nature-and-culture stop.

Epecuén is also considered a panoramic viewpoint for astronomy and night photography. Then focus your hotel search in the Partido on this interest.
