El Jabalí can be explored through two specific historical traces: the water supply for steam locomotives at Estación El Jabalí and the history of Escuela Primaria Nro. 25 “Florentino Ameghino”. If you are looking for a holiday rental, first consider whether you want to search specifically in El Jabalí or also include the wider travel area of 9 De Julio.

Railway and School History in El Jabalí

A 2016 travel account describes diesel engines and pumps on the grounds of Estación El Jabalí, drawing well water for the boilers of steam locomotives. The 2016 travel account also describes the original water tank and locomotive water-filling pipes as intact. Together, these structures show the role water supply played in steam operations. The station belonged to the Compañía General de Ferrocarriles en la Provincia de Buenos Aires; its line ran from Patricios to General Villegas. In the Province of Buenos Aires inventory of tourism resources, Estación ferroviaria El Jabalí is listed in the section on Nueve de Julio among the historical resources, as well as under historical museums and buildings.

The local history of the school also goes back a long way: Escuela Primaria Nro. 25 “Florentino Ameghino” has been operating since 1946, and the current school building was inaugurated in 1981. The institution and its building therefore have different dates. In 2024, the city government of Nueve de Julio’s traditional annual “Museo a las Escuelas” program reached the school. The educational activity shared and preserved tangible and intangible cultural heritage for students and their teachers.

A notice dated May 3, 2024, also described the completed “Nuestra Historia Habla” event at the school. It addressed immigration in the Partido de 9 de Julio. Together, the two activities tell different aspects of local history: one format focused on sharing cultural heritage, the other on the immigration history of the Partido.

Getting There and the Landscape

For travel planning, note the date of a notice from the city government of Nueve de Julio: on April 24, 2025, it reported that substantial quantities of earth had been laid on the route identified as RP 70 between Quiroga and El Jabalí. Check current road conditions before setting out. The notice refers to work as of that date and does not describe current road conditions.

A 2016 travel account mentions a Marian chapel or shrine to the Virgen on the way to El Jabalí. The same account describes Canal Mercante and lower-lying areas that were partly covered by water; a variety of fauna could be seen along the way. These are observations from the travel account at the time, not a statement that water levels or wildlife sightings remain unchanged. The location along the route places the chapel or shrine on the way there, not in the town center.

Culture in the Wider Travel Area of 9 De Julio

For a broader look at cultural history, the wider travel area of 9 De Julio offers further distinct themes. Archivo y Museo Histórico Gral. Julio de Vedia was founded on July 8, 1916. It preserves and displays historical and artistic cultural heritage associated with the Partido de 9 de Julio. The museum’s sections include prehistory, with paleontology, archaeology and Indigenous cultures; the founding period and various historical eras; research and art; photography and medicine; and an archive.

The former uses of railway stations can also be seen in different places across the wider travel area: the former Patricios railway station now houses the Museo Ferroviario. Facundo Quiroga’s former railway station now serves as a public library and museum, with more than 11,000 volumes and archaeological exhibits. Teatro Comunitario de Patricios has represented the community at gatherings at the national and international levels.

Traditional festivals in La Niña include the Fiesta de la Empanada on December 7; Patricios is associated with the Fiesta de la Pizza in September. At the Fiesta del Puré in French, skilled cooks compete each year with recipes for preparing this dish. These festival themes complement local and railway history with culinary traditions, without attributing them to El Jabalí.

Landscape and history are also connected across the wider travel area: Laguna Cruz de Guerra is associated with the fort of the same name, built there in 1827 during Rosas’s time. No traces of the fort remain; an estancia of the same name is now located on the site. The island in Parque General San Martín is designated as a cultural asset of historical and cultural heritage in the Reserva Natural category. Discover more destinations: Nueve De Julio.
