Sea turtles give Porto Amboim a tangible connection to nature conservation. Two projects show different aspects of the topic: research and protection, and cooperation with the local community.

Sea Turtles in Porto Amboim

The Kitabanga project in the municipality of Hogiua, in the Município Porto Amboim, has been dedicated to researching and protecting sea turtles since 2003. At Praia da Ojiwa beach in Porto Amboim, the Quitabanga project works with the local community to protect the animals. These are two distinct aspects: research and protection in Hogiua, and community engagement at Praia da Ojiwa.

Praia da Ojiwa is also said to have the highest turtle population density; no comparison area is specified. This density claim emphasizes something different from the engagement with the local community: it describes the beach in comparison, while the project work describes cooperation on the ground. Those considering Porto Amboim for its nature conservation can therefore distinguish between a reported population density and a described conservation initiative.

Kwanza-Sul: Other Nature and Culture Topics

The wider destination of Kwanza-Sul has other nature-related attractions in different municipalities. The Caculo Cabaça waterfalls in Libolo are listed in the province’s tourist inventory as places of tourist interest. The Cachoeiras do Binga are on the Keve River in the municipality of Conda. Conda is also home to the thermal and medicinal waters of Tokota; the medicinal waters of Catanda are in Seles. The regional connections thus differ by type and location: waterfalls in Libolo and Conda, and medicinal waters in Conda and Seles, complement the sea turtle conservation work in Porto Amboim as distinct topics.

The beaches of Kicombo, Carimba and Chiculcua, as well as the beach at Rio Tapado in Sumbe, are described as suitable for swimming. Check local conditions before swimming. This means that, alongside the conservation projects, Kwanza-Sul also offers an explicitly swimming-related topic. The information emphasizes different aspects: Praia da Ojiwa is associated with sea turtle conservation, while the beaches mentioned are described as suitable for swimming. This allows the regional questions of species protection and suitability for swimming to be considered separately.

Cultural and historical examples are also part of the Kwanza-Sul destination. The Ulu Upe beach festival brought thousands of people to the Marginal do Sumbe on a Friday, 27 September, to mark the 107th anniversary of Cuanza Sul Province. Sumbe is also home to the ruins of Fortim do Kicombo. As part of organized visits for National Culture Day celebrations, a group of visitors toured the Fortaleza, Vasco da Gama and Largo dos Pescadores. An earlier activity by the Centro de Ciência de Luanda was a moon observation in Sumbe from 7 to 9 June, intended to make astronomy better known in the community and to spark the interest of young people and the public. The different occasions help put the examples into context: a festival, organized visits to historical sites and a scientific activity are presented side by side.
