St. Helena brings together very different ways to experience the island: Post Box walks vary in difficulty, a vast marine protected area surrounds the island, and a history walk in Jamestown presents the past in chronological order. This creates a travel theme that brings physical activity, maritime discoveries and culture together. You can choose the focus based on the interests of your travel group, rather than reducing the island to a single way of experiencing it.

Hikes and special occasions

It’s worth taking a close look at each individual route on the Post Box walks. Some are suitable only for very experienced hikers, while others are family-friendly. These differences make choosing a route a matter of your own hiking experience and the makeup of your group. Check the current status of your chosen route before making specific plans.

The annual marathon held on St. Helena, known as the “World’s Most Remote Marathon,” can be another reason to visit. Event dates may vary, so check the dates if you want to plan your trip around the race.

Marine protected area and wreck diving

The marine protected area surrounding St. Helena falls into Category VI and is almost as large as France. This comparison gives a tangible sense of its scale: it covers an area nearly the size of a country, not just a single stretch of coastline. This gives the sea its own place alongside hiking and history as you discover the island.

For diving enthusiasts, there is another specific way to explore the maritime theme: you can dive at eight shipwrecks off St. Helena, but a local guide is required. Before your trip, check current local operators and their availability if wreck diving is part of your plans.

History in Jamestown

The Walk-Through History leads through a historic area of Jamestown and presents St. Helena’s history in chronological order. This chronological sequence gives the walk a clear narrative thread and offers a structured way to explore the island’s past. The original installation included 28 panels about internationally significant figures who had visited St. Helena since the island was discovered; the number may change.

Buildings of the East India Company have also been preserved in Jamestown. Together, the chronological walk and the preserved buildings offer two different ways to explore history: a story arranged by time and architectural heritage preserved in the town. The planning considerations are distinct: for a hike, difficulty and route status matter; for the marathon, event dates; and for wreck diving, the required guide and the availability of local operators.
